Why was Jamaica’s goal against Mexico ruled out?
Jamaica thought they had taken the lead in their Copa America 2024 Group B encounter with Mexico when Michail Antonio headed them in front in the 50th minute. It was an excellent finish from the West Ham United frontman and a deserved opener for the Reggae Boyz.
However, the Jamaican’s celebrations were cut short when VAR intervened, and Moroccan-born American referee Ismail Elfath announced the goal was disallowed. Antonio appeared to have beaten the trap, but that wasn’t the case, and El Tri blew a sigh of relief, having been put under the cosh early in the second half.
Edson Alvarez’s injury mars Mexico’s clash with Jamaica
Edson Alvarez took a knock in the first half when Demarai Gray unintentionally clipped the West Ham United midfielder. The former Ajax man was left floored and couldn’t continue. The Premier League star was taken off the pitch in tears, with his Mexican teammates consoling him. It doesn’t look good for El Tri’s captain regarding his participation in the rest of Copa America 2024.
Mexico and Jamaica are in Group B alongside Venezuela and Ecuador, who played one another earlier at night. The Venezuelans came away with a 2-1 victory after Enner Valencia was sent off. They sit top of the group and next face Mexico on Thursday (June 27).
