EURO 2024: Major blow for Arsenal as Scotland star Kieran Tierney stretchered off the field

While Scotland has kept themselves alive in the Euros following a draw against Switzerland, the point came at an enormous cost. Key defender Kieran Tierney picked up a freak injury during the second half of the contest. The defender went in for a loose ball but competed with Dan Ndoye for possession. Tierney during this overstretched for the ball as he took to the ground in pain.

The Arsenal star instantly knew something was wrong as he quickly signaled towards the bench, looking for a substitution. Things seemed rough for the defender as he had to be stretchered off the field. According to reports, the player has torn his hamstring and will be unavailable for Scotland’s remaining fixtures if they can make it further in the tournament.

While the injury is a colossal blow for Steve Clark’s side, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal too has taken a big dent. The Gunner was keen on selling the defender this summer to raise funds during the transfer window, but it seems things are now out of their hands with the player expected to spend close to four to five months on the sidelines.

Kieran Tierney’s injury pushes Arsenal’s plans on the back foot

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal feels selling the player this summer could be a step in the right direction. The Gunners desperately need to revamp their squad after coming up short twice in a row in the race for the Premier League title.

Despite being injury-prone, selling Kieran Tierney could have helped Arsenal raise somewhere close to $14 million. While that isn’t a big deal, the Scottish defender is on a $152,000-a-week wage at the Emirates. Getting him off the balance books could have allowed Arsenal to save another $8 million. However, with the defender now injured, the Gunners are now in a losing situation with the team expected to pay the player’s wages as he recovers from the blow.
