Chelsea’s Transfer Strategy: Todd Boehly provides deep insights on why the club is spending tons
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has explained the Chelsea’s transfer strategy which has been attracting a lot of criticism since the takeover. Boehly has claimed that rather than spending money, the Blues are investing money. Hence, the players they are spending on continue to hold their value.
The Blues have recently focused on spending heavily on young players. As a result, Chelsea have amassed a squad full of highly-touted young prospects. Explaining the process, Boehly said (via Blue_Footy on X):
“When we are spending, we are investing and those players continue to hold their value. So what we are thinking of is what does it cost to finance that portfolio of players. Some will go up and some will go down in value, but I argue the investments made at Chelsea have held their value.”
Boehly added:
“We are not spending the money, we are investing the money. So when we buy, we are just thinking about the cost of carry.”
Chelsea have spent big money on players like Mykhaylo Mudryk. Moises Caicedo, Wesley Fofana, Enzo Fernandez, and more in recent times. Since Boehly and co. took over the club’s ownership Chelsea have spent over one billion USD in the transfer market.
Simon Jordan hails Chelsea’s summer signing Cole Palmer
Chelsea signed Cole Palmer from Manchester City in the summer. Palmer was starved of game time at the Etihad and wanted more first-team action. He has received just that at Chelsea and has exceeded expectations with his performances. Palmer has so far scored 24 goals and has provided 14 assists in 43 appearances across competitions this season. Speaking about Palmer’s form, Jordan said (via A Stamford Bridge Too Far):
“I kind of had reservations about him initially because I thought there’s no way that Guardiola lets him go because he can’t manage the kid’s expectations. And then I’ve seen in the last six weeks an acceleration in Cole Palmer. I thought he was doing well but in recent performances, he’s gone to a different level.”
Palmer’s form should earn the player a call-up to the England squad for the UEFA Euro 2024. The 22-year-old has so far made two appearances for his country’s senior team.
