Ipswich Town earn promotion to the Premier League after 22 years

For the first time in 22 years, Ipswich Town will play in the Premier League. The Tractor Boys secured their place in the top flight division next season after beating Huddersfield Town by two goals to nil.

It’s the second straight promotion in two seasons since Kieran McKenna took over the managerial job. The Portman Road pitch was flooded by fans who could not hold back the euphoria of returning to the competition where the last time they were in was in 2002.

Hard work pays off as Ipswich Town earn promotion

A worthy celebration for the fans whose club had a financial struggle for years. In 2019, Ipswich were relegated to the third tier competition, the first time ever since 1957. The club’s official account immediately wrote ‘A Premier League football club’, right after the full-time whistle was blown.

“It means a lot,” McKenna told SkySports after the game. “Mostly seeing how much it means to everyone, the players, the supporters … to be one of the leaders of that is absolutely massive.

“It’s a wonderful day, I’m very, very proud of everyone involved … we’ve delivered a really good performance … it’s what we’ve done all year … it’s served us well … it’s an incredible amount of effort.”

Since the inception of the Premier League format, Ipswich are the fifth side to earn promotion from the third tier to the top tier. The 96 points they earned is also the second highest they ever had after collecting 98 points in League One last season.
