Noni Madueke proud of Chelsea after VAR drama in Aston Villa clash

Chelsea visited Aston Villa over the weekend and fell two goals behind under 45 minutes of the tie. But the Blues came out stronger after the break with two crucial goals from Noni Madueke and Conor Gallagher to fight back to 2-2 against Unai Emery’s men.

Why was Noni Madueke dragged away from referee Craig Pawson?

The Blues thought they had won the game when Axel Disasi headed into the goal from close range to make it 3-2 in the 96th minute. However, the goal was disallowed after a lengthy VAR check.

Referee Craig Pawson was urged to view the pitchside monitor where he found Benoit Badiashile shoving Diego Carlos in the back in the build-up to the goal. The referee chalked off the strike due to the foul by the Chelsea defender.

Chelsea forward Noni Madueke was furious with the decision and shouted at Pawson before he was restrained by Chelsea coach Jesus Perez. The England international wanted to make his feelings known after the final whistle.

Noni Madueke happy after Chelsea’s comeback against Aston Villa at Villa Park

Even though Madueke and Gallagher were on the scoresheet for Chelsea, Moises Caicedo was arguably the best player at Villa Park on Saturday.

‘We beat them here earlier in the season so we wanted to come here and win, that was our goal. It wasn’t to be but nevertheless I’m still proud of the boys, it was a good performance,’ said Madueke.

‘We do need to play better at times in phases of the game. However, we have an abundance of quality and when we fight we’re a match for any team on our day.

‘Of course, the last result was terrible at the Emirates, but I think for maybe 70 minutes of the game yesterday the team were outstanding. So we just need to brush up on certain details, but it’s a process and I’m proud of what the boys did on Saturday.’
