Viktor Gyokeres’ future has been linked with Liverpool-bound manager Ruben Amorim
Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool this summer who will reportedly succeed Jurgen Klopp as the club’s next manager.
Klopp will be stepping down from his position at the Merseyside club towards the end of the campaign. Amorim has emerged as one of the leading candidates to take over the managerial role after Xabi Alonso announced he would stay with Bayer Leverkusen beyond the summer.
The 39-year-old manager won the Liga Portugal title in his first season with Lisbon and is on course to win a second this campaign.
Why is Viktor Gyokeres’ future at Sporting Lisbon in doubt?
There have been rumours that Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim has verbally agreed to a ‘three-year contract’ with Liverpool but both parties are yet to sign an official agreement.
Amorim is currently steering Sporting to Primeira Liga glory as the Portuguese giants are sitting four points clear at the top of the table. There have been speculations circling that Viktor Gyokeres could leave Sporting if the Portuguese tactician departs this summer.
Gyokeres has been in sensational form for Sporting amassing 36 goals in 42 games in all competitions so far and has caught the eye of several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Chelsea.
But Sporting are under no pressure to facilitate the transfer of the Swede international who is believed to have an £85m release clause and still has four years remaining on his contract.
Arsenal are believed to be firm favorites for the talented striker and it remains to be seen whether Mikel Arteta will make a move for the former Coventry City man.
But transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano claims the Swede international could follow suit if Amorim decides to leave Sporting in the summer.
“Gyokeres, who has had a superb first season with Sporting with 50 goal/assist contributions, had many proposals last summer from different clubs, but Amorim was a key factor for him to join Sporting. So obviously, with Amorim probably leaving this summer, it could mean the same for Gyokeres.”
He added: “For sure Sporting will fight to keep their stars but it will depend on the proposals. For Gyokeres, they insist on clubs paying his €100m release clause. As previously reported, the Swedish striker is one of the names on Arsenal’s list, they really like the player, but still need to decide internally what kind of striker they will prioritize this summer.”
