Newcastle United 3:0 Ipswich Town Player Ratings: Kieran Trippier Assists Newcastle to a Comfortable Win Against a 10-Man Ipswich
Newcastle United jumped up to third spot in the table with a fine 3-0 victory against a 10-man Ipswich Town. The Magpies took their time to get going in the game, but Ben Johnson’s sending off gave them a great chance to open the floodgates. Alexander Isak converted a penalty in the first half of extra time to open the scoring. Dan Burn doubled the advantage in a lopsided second half as William Osula completed the rout to send Ipswich back to the Championship.
Newcastle United came crashing to Earth when they were steamrolled 4-1 by Aston Villa. Eddie Howe’s men were in great form before suffering a shock reversal. They were still in a good place to make it to the Champions League. The manager believed it was a one-off poor performance and backed his team by nearly naming the same lineup against Ipswich.
The Tractor Boys were on the brink of relegation coming into this game. They needed to win five straight games to avoid the drop. Anything less than a win this evening would instantly confirm their relegation to the Championship. Kieran McKenna’s side was without Leif Davis, who was red-carded in the previous game. Liam Delap also made a return to the starting lineup to build on his prolific season in the league.
The hosts made a nervy start as Dan Burn gave the ball away in his box early on. He was relieved when he managed to deflect Jack Clarke’s subsequent effort. Ipswich maintained a tight shape at the back and defended in numbers whenever Newcastle got forward. The Magpies were a bit lacklustre as they depended on sending a lot of crosses into the box.
Ipswich defended like their lives depended on it, but they thought they went behind when Bruno Guimaraes’ effort went in. They got a lucky break as the referee spotted Alex Palmer being fouled in Ipswich’s goal. Just minutes later, there was no sympathy from the referee for Ipswich as he booked Ben Johnson for simulation near the Newcastle box.
The English winger made life miserable for himself in the 37th minute when he pulled back Alexander Isak with two hands, forcing a second yellow card from the referee. Newcastle United, who were already pinning Ipswich back, completely turned the game into an attack vs defence affair. Ipswich made a defensive change to rearrange the backline.
Newcastle United could barely believe how the game was level as Ipswich put up some great resistance in the box. Luke Woolfenden cleared an effort off the line, and Dara O’Shea put his body on the line to deny Isak. The visitors were waiting for the half-time whistle, and just when they were relieved to enter the stoppage time goalless, Julio Enciso got on the wrong side of Jacob Murphy and pulled him down. After a lengthy VAR check, the on-field referee awarded Newcastle a soft but fair penalty.
Alexander Isak, who was barely involved in the game till then, except for a volley, stepped and dispatched it with nonchalance to bring up his 22nd league goal of the season. It made sense for the home support as they dominated more than 2/3rds of the ball and created 1.94xG in the half. Ipswich though, were heartbroken and needed to score twice without conceding, all while being a man down at a tough away ground to stay in the league.
The second half panned out as everyone expected, with the Magpies completely steamrolling Ipswich. Just 12 minutes into the half, Kieran Trippier sent a lovely delivery from a short corner as Burn attacked it with intent and doubled their lead. The second goal broke Ipswich’s spirit as it sealed their fate in the league.
Being in a dominant position allowed Eddie Howe to turn to his bench and give some minutes to the players who needed him. They were cantering to a comfortable victory in the game. William Osula made a sweet contact with a corner to triple Newcastle’s lead in the 80th minute to bring up his first Premier League goal for the Magpies.
Newcastle United consolidated their position in the top 4 with another solid victory. They will finish the weekend in third position, making them firm favourites for the Champions League. They will visit Brighton next weekend in the league. Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed with this defeat. Their much-awaited return to the Premier League lasted only one season as they went back down. They entertain Brentford at home next weekend to play for pride.
Here are the player ratings for Newcastle United vs Ipswich Town.
Newcastle United Player Ratings

GK- Nick Pope- 6.5/10
He was rarely involved in the first half but breathed a sigh of relief as Dan Burn’s awkward giveaway in the penalty area didn’t hurt him.
RB- Kieran Trippier- 9/10
Almost played as a traditional wide midfielder on the right as Newcastle completely dominated the ball. Delivered plenty of threatening crosses and made his set pieces count. One such lovely cross was bundled home by Burn from close range. Added one more assist from a corner this time.
CB- Fabian Schar- 7/10
He was heckled by Liam Delap once or twice, but kept his composure well and attempted some great cross-field switches.
CB- Dan Burn- 8/10
The lanky centre-back gave the ball away under pressure from Delap but made amends with a good block. His outstretched leg forced Ben Johnson to tumble down, forcing the referee to book him for simulation. Scored his first goal of the season from a lovely Trippier delivery.
LB- Valentino Livramento- 7/10
Similar to Trippier, he pushed forward all the time to help his side out in the attack. Drifted inwards with the ball to create some openings for his side.
CM- Bruno Guimaraes- 8/10
He was enjoying the process of breaking down Ipswich’s low block with some well-measured through passes. Had a well deserved goal ruled out and an effort cleared off the line.
CM- Sandro Tonali- 8/10
Started the game with a couple of loose passes but got his bite back. Rattled the crossbar with a fantastic effort and continuously made efforts to double their lead.
CM- Joseph Willock- 6.5/10
Started ahead of Joelinton as the manager needed his attacking expertise against the low block. Got into a mess with Sam Morsy as the VAR briefly checked for a potential red card offence.
RW- Jacob Murphy- 8/10
Held the width on the right sides and made some clever runs to receive Bruno’s passes and fire some cut-backs. One such run won a penalty for them.
ST- Alexander Isak- 7.5/10
To everyone’s surprise, he was barely involved in the attack till the 40th minutes or so. Sprung to life later with a fine volley and then got Ben Johnson sent off with a fine piece of skill. Fired a penalty to continue his near-perfect record from the spot.
LW- Harvey Barnes- 7/10
Wanted to continue his good form, especially knowing that Gordon was back and available. Made some good dribbles with the ball but was unable to get the end product.
SUB- Lewis Miley- 6/10
SUB- Anthony Gordon- 6/10
SUB- Callum Wilson- 6/10
SUB- William Osula- 7/10
Rose the highest to head home his first league goal for his new side.
SUB- Sven Botman- 6/10
Manager- Eddie Howe- 7/10
Expected a low block and tweaked his side to beat it. They were frustrated by a determined Ipswich defence but kept on trying and got the goods. Managed to rotate the players and keep everyone happy.
Ipswich Town Player Ratings

GK- Alex Palmer- 5/10
Had an unconvincing game as he never commanded his box. Got a lucky escape as the referee disallowed a goal for a foul on him. Had plenty of heart-in-mouth moments with crosses and set pieces.
RB- Dara O’Shea- 6/10
Had to deal with the threat of Barnes and did considerably well by tracking him and not letting him cut past him. Was dunked on by Dunk for the second goal.
CB- Luke Woolfenden- 6.5/10
Was a solid presence in the box as he cleared an effort off the line in the first half. The second half performance was similar to a training session one.
CB- Cameron Burgess- 6/10
Covered his angles well in the first half as he shut out Alexander Isak well. Faded away in the second half.
LB- Jacob Greaves- 6/10
Deputising at left back ahead of Davis, he had to deal with the in-form Murphy. Had a helping hand from Enciso, but he was often overwhelmed.
RM- Ben Johnson- 3/10
Played as a winger again but had to defend entirely. Got a harsh yellow card for a simulation. The second yellow card was well deserved as he completely got on the wrong side of Isak. Pushed his side into an abyss with his dismissal.
CM- Sam Morsy- 6/10
The captain put in a lot of hard work to win the ball back multiple times, but never had a forward pass available to him.
CM- Jack Taylor- 6/10
Paired up with Morsy in the middle of the park to defend against wave after wave of Newcastle attacks. Did his best to impose himself on the game, but it never happened.
LM- Jack Clarke- 6/10
Started the game with a great chance and was driving them forward whenever he had the chance. But he was sacrificed to maintain the defensive shape when they were down to 10.
CAM- Julio Enciso- 5.5/10
Unleashed a dangerous shot early in the first half, and that was about it in the attacking sense. Conceded a penalty with an ill-timed tackle on Murphy.
ST- Liam Delap- 5/10
The forward put some good pressure on the backline early on. He was well handled by the centre-backs as he failed to get the shots away.
SUB- Ben Godfrey- 6/10
SUB- Conor Chaplin- 6/10
SUB- George Hirst- 6/10
SUB- Massimo Luongo- 6/10
Manager- Kieran McKenna- 5.5/10
The manager tried everything in the book to stay alive in the game. But Ben Johnson’s sending off changed his plans. A defeat sealed their fate in the league. He would be tasked with another promotion charge next season.
