Ugly Scenes in Jamshedpur as Police Clash with Mohun Bagan Fans During ISL Semi-Final

There were some nasty scenes at the JRD Tata Sports Complex as the Jamshedpur police lathi charged Mohun Bagan fans in the ground, during the first leg of their ISL semifinal against Jamshedpur FC. Shocking visuals have spread on social media of the away fans suffering from serious injuries as a result of the acts of the police.

The incident happened shortly after Mohun Bagan equalised in the game although no reason for the same has been given on behalf of the Jamshedpur police force at the time of writing. No clear cause has been reported by other witnesses of the incident as well.

Jamshedpur edge past Mohun Bagan

On the field, the hosts will be very happy with the 2-1 win on the night. Mohun Bagan are the ISL Shield winners and very much the favourites for this game. However, it was Khalid Jamil’s side who took the lead in the 24th minute through Javier Siviero.

Their lead didn’t last long as the Mariners equalised in the 38th minute courtesy a fantastic free-kick goal from Australian Jason Cummings. Both teams traded blows in the second half, but the match was ultimately decided in the 91st minute by Javi Hernandez, who finished off a good move after making a late run into the box.

The job is only half done, though, as Jamshedpur now have to travel to the lion’s den, the Salt Lake Stadium, where Mohun Bagan’s home record has been ridiculous.

That being said, the joy of a famous win for the hosts today was sullied by the incident of violence. It truly has no place in a football game where fans go to enjoy and cheer their team on, especially when it is in a different city, as was the case today.
