IND vs NZ Head-to-Head: ODI Records, Stats & Champions Trophy 2025 Clash

The Champions Trophy 2025 has brought back an international ODI tournament after the 2023 ODI World Cup. For ODI fans they are finally back to watching 50 overs of day & night cricket. Eight top-ranked international teams are playing in this competition where teams are divided into two groups- Group A and B.
The Group A is comprised of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh & New Zealand. Only two matches have been played in this group where India and New Zealand have started their campaign with victories. The two teams will be facing each other in the last match of the group stage on March 2, 2025.

Everything said and done, ODIs featuring India and New Zealand have never really been as hyped up to garner attention as they deserve—and that shortcoming is deliberate as it’s ever only been about the cricket. India and New Zealand have put on epic shows as each team displayed their skill and talent while having fierce battles against each other.

Endless years of fixation on the game have over the years cultivated a deep-seated rivalry that is only enhanced by brilliant tactics on the field crafted through painstaking dedication, and innovative demolitions of the opposing players.

Before their upcoming match, let’s take a look at the overall head-to-head records between the two teams in ODIs:

IND vs NZ Head-to-Head Records in ICC Champions Trophy

The two teams have locked horns with each other only once in the Champions Trophy. Back then it was known as the ICC Knockout Trophy where the two cricketing giants met in the year 2000.

Indian National Cricket Team and New Zealand National Cricket Team had somehow made their way to the finals but with completely different strategies. Sourav’s team India was thumping the youth’s positive energy and went on to blitzkrieg Australia and South Africa, all while flaunting their aggressive, fearless, and sometimes, arrogant style of playing. On the other hand, Stephen Flemings New Zealand had also managed to scrape their way through and shocked everyone by defeating Pakistan in the semis with their passionate never-give-up attitude.

Like classic times, Ganguly domesticated England after losing the toss and was asked to bat first. He scored and played 117 runs off 130 balls. Notably aggressive innings were supported by Sachin Tendulkar, who scored an unbelievably fluent 69 with great ease. The pair formed a fantastic opening partnership of 141 runs which fueled India with hopes of gold medal.

There is a great saying that cruelty and humility are two sides of the same coin and like every other match, it proved to be true here as well. As India began to reach their monumental score India thought they were safe but between them and the finish line stood Styris and Cairns who broke partnerships at the most crucial moments. The match result turned out to be depressing as India winning the toss and setting a target of 264 still left room for self-doubt with so many losing wickets.

An entirely different approach was taken by New Zealand who started the match with no direction only to find it later. They ended with 132 remaining 5 wickets which was a dip situation in the match and a turning point in favor of India. Indian player, Venkatesh Prasad (3/27) proved his discipline and gave his all, ensuring a promising future for his country.

And that’s when Chris Cairns comes crashing, a driven man harnessed plea behaviour claiming to snatch the glory away from ICC. 102 of 113 balls and the man flourishing with pure power and gritty determination. The innings paired with Dhoni attacking the lower order batsman changed the result making it New Zealand’s way. The 122 runs with batsman and Harris resulted in changing notions from despair to hope and further to winning the match by 4 wickets.

New Zealand has achieved their very first ICC title with two balls remaining. Even though India performed magnificently throughout the entire tournament, they were still unhappy with the result.

In the most recent encounter of these two teams in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 league match, the Indian National Cricket Team defeated the New Zealand National Cricket Team by 44 runs. New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first and the Indian team scored 249/9 in the first inning in which Shreyas Iyer was the highest scorer with 79 runs. In the reply, New Zealand scored 205 runs and got all out. New Zealand’s former captain Kane Williamson scored 81 runs but in the end Indian Team won the match.

These two are going to face each other in the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and fans can expect a match full of excitement
