Keller was born in Olympia, Washington, and attended North Thurston High School. Developing a passion for the sport during his childhood, Kasey Keller played soccer from his school days and continued to play soccer during his college days as well. He played college soccer at the University of Portland and was impressive during his time in college playing under the leadership of soccer legend Clive Charles. During his freshman season in 1988, he went on to take his team to the NCAA men’s soccer final four.

During his off-season for college in 1989, he played for Portland Timbers which played in the Western Soccer Alliance. His outstanding goalkeeping skills led him to win the League MVP that year. As he continued to show commendable performances through his time with Portland Timbers and the US U-20 National team, he attracted a lot of domestic clubs around the world.

After showcasing impressive performances in college football and for the US National Team, Keller was signed by English team Millwall in 1992. Making over 200 appearances for the club till 1996, Keller was one of the most loved soccer stars in Millwall and widely appreciated for his impressive defensive prowess. After the team was delegated to the second division in 1996, they transferred Keller to the English side Leicester City.

Keller was an important addition to the side as he went on to win the League Cup with Leicester City before moving to Spanish club Rayo Vallecano. Keller played for two years with the club and showcased impressive defensive skills in every match. After having a good outing in Spain, Keller returned to England aligning himself with Tottenham Hotspur in 2001.

Being a regular starter for the club, Keller was the first-choice goalkeeper for the side and was one of the most prominent players on the team. After making a name for himself in Spain and England, Keller moved to Germany joining Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2005.

Being the first-choice goalkeeper for the German side, he was a top-tier goalkeeper and proved to be beneficial for the side. The legendary goalkeeper further joined Fulham for one year in 2007 and moved to Seattle Sounders FC in the United States. Being the starting goalkeeper for the side, he was one of the most prolific goalkeepers and became one of the oldest players in MLS history to play at such a level. He retired from the club in 2011 after playing his final match against Chivas USA at the age of 41.

The legendary goalkeeper started his international journey in 1990 against Colombia. He played in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and played in two games at the tournament. He was also part of the US football team for the 1996 Olympics where he started all three matches. Given his impressive goalkeeping skills, Keller was presented with the US Soccer Athlete of the Year award three times.

As he continued to show impressive form, his infamous performance against Brazil in 1998 was historic as he made 10 saves throughout the game ensuring a win for the United States. Keller has the most number of clean sheets in US soccer history with 47 clean sheets under his name.

Keller was also a part of the 2005 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and had 507 goalless minutes to lead the United States to a successful qualification. He was also named the man of the match for his tremendous performance at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in a heated match against Italy which ended in a 1-1 draw. While he was on the official squad for the 1990 FIFA World Cup, that made him the only US player to participate in both the 1990 and 2006 World Cups.

After retiring from Seattle Sounders FC as a goalkeeper in 2011, he joined the side’s broadcast team and worked as a color commentator in 2012. Keller was a part of the club through the 2022 season which saw Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass taking over local broadcasters. Apart from working with Seattle Sounders FC, Kasey Keller has also been a part of various ESPN broadcasts over the years as a color commentator and studio analyst. He has covered various international and domestic tournaments and keeps making several appearances on numerous ESPN FC programs.
