Man United scripted history for THIS reason during Aston Villa’s win

Manchester United’s Premier League season could take a major turn in the coming days after they beat Aston Villa 2-1 in a major result in the team’s Champions League pursuit. The win at Villa Park on Sunday (Feb 11) is the first time Manchester United have registered a win against “top-five” opposition away from home this campaign. However, the fixture in Birmingham saw the Red Devils script a piece of history for the first time in 67 years.

Manchester United script history

Under pressure before the start of the match against Villa, United recorded a unique feat as soon as the first whistle was blown at a jam-packed Villa Park. Playing at an away Premier League ground, United’s white shirt and red shorts kit is the first time they have donned the colours in 67 years. Never before in the last 67 years had the Red Devils worn red shorts with a white T-shirt.

The main reason for this change in kit was because of Aston Villa’s home kit at Villa Park. Villa were playing in the claret shirts and white shorts, forcing a kit clash had United used white shorts as well. To avoid the kit clash, United had to weather their away kit or the third kit.

The last time Man United used the red shorts combination was in the 1957 European Cup season when they faced eventual champions Real Madrid.

What happened in the match?

Starting the day on 38 points, Erik ten Hag’s side needed a win at Villa Park to avoid going nine points adrift of the Champions League places. The Red Devils had beaten Villa on Boxing Day when they came from 0-2 down to win 3-2 at Old Trafford. Scott McTominay was the match-winner for the Red Devils having scored the winner from the bench in the 87th minute.

Earlier Rasmus Hojlund had opened the scoring and saw United making a fine start to the match and lead at the half time break. However, things changed in the second half after Unai Emery’s side got back into the match after the hour mark when Douglas Luiz pulled one back for the hosts.

United will next take on Luton Town in London on Sunday (Feb 18) before hosting Fulham at Old Trafford a week later. Erik ten Hag’s side will have the advantage of not playing in Europe for the second half of the campaign having been knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage.

They currently sit sixth in the points table and are six points behind Tottenham Hotspur as the North London side are in the pole position to reach the Champions League next season. Aston Villa on the flip side have now lost back-to-back home games in all competitions.
