Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou slams the idea of Sin Bins in football

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has voiced his opinion against the idea of sin bins in football. He suggested that introducing this concept would be taking another step in the direction of unnecessarily complicating the sport.

Recent reports suggest that a new blue card will be introduced in football along with the existing yellow and red cards. A referee can show a blue card to a player for a dangerous foul or for dissent. The said player will then have to step off the pitch for 10 minutes before coming back on.

The idea will be tested next season in some lower leagues and cup competitions. This has drawn widespread criticism from fans, pundits, and managers alike.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp recently spoke against it and he has been joined by Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou. Before Spurs’ Premier League clash against Brighton & Hove Albion on February 10, Ange said (via The Guardian):

“One team being down to 10 men for 10 minutes, you know what it’s going to do to our game? It’s going to destroy it, mate.”

“You’re going to have one team just sitting there trying to waste time for 10 minutes waiting for a guy to come on. Every other sport is trying to declutter. All we’re trying to do is go the other way for some bizarre reason.”

The Tottenham manager has also previously spoken about his dislike of VAR, saying everyone should just accept the on-field decisions by the referees instead.

The sin bin trials, meanwhile, could also take place in the EFL Cup and the FA Cup next season.
