Jurgen Klopp’s 5 Most Disappointing Signings as Liverpool Manager
Here we take a look at some of the most disappointing signings or flop signings under Jurgen Klopp as a Liverpool boss:
1. Naby Keita
Naby Keita stands out as one of Jurgen Klopp’s 5 most disappointing signings during his reign at Premier League club Liverpool. The central midfielder was acquired by the Reds from the German club RB Leipzig in2018. However, Kieta didn’t even inch close to becoming a player for the English club that one hoped for in the long run. The midfielder didn’t prove to be a player who was consistent enough for Klopp’s side. Also, whenever injuries to other players provided him a run in the first team, he failed to impress with his performances.
2. Fabio Carvalho
The Portuguese forward Fabio Carvalho’s impressive stint with Fulham in the Premier League caught everyone’s eyes. As a result, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool picked him up and added to their squad depth. However, Fabio struggled to get any decent game time in his first season at Anfield. In some of the chances that he got to play, he performed on an average note. The player is currently on loan to Championship side Hull City and will be there till the 2023-2024 season ends. He is on the list of flop signings under Jurgen Klopp.
3. Xherdan Shaqiri
Liverpool announced the signing of Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City FC in July 2018 the summer transfer window. Over his stint at the Merseyside club, the Swiss player proved to be a hit and a miss for most of the time. Whenever it looked like he had managed to indulge himself in Klopp’s plans and could get an extended run in the playing eleven, his below-par performances left him and the Reds’s fans extremely disappointed. He surely stands out as one of the flop signings under Jurgen Klopp.
4. Thiago Alcantara
Liverpool bought Thiago Alcantara from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in 2020. His first few seasons at the club were decent where he got a consistent run in the midfield. However, since the 2022-2023 top-flight campaign, Thiago struggled to deliver consistent performances. On several moments he looked like a player whose best days were well past him. Also, persistent injury woes didn’t help his cause.
5. Darwin Nunez
A vast majority of Liverpool and football fans around the world still feel that Darwin Nunez hasn’t lived up to the hefty transfer fee that the Reds paid for him. He is still quite inconsistent in front of the goal and does rank among strikers with the most missed chances in the 2023-2024 Premier League campaign. For a team, competing for the title, their main man can’t afford to lack that clinical edge. Signed from the Portuguese club Benfica in June 2022, the youngster had much to prove going forward in the Premier League.
