3 players key for Tottenham Hotspur’s ambitions this season

Tottenham Hotspur feel like they are building something very solid. In Ange Postecoglou, they have a manager that the team really seems to believe in. The squad has also been bolstered by some youthful signings. They also have a really good crop of youngster coming through. A Champions League spot should be the target. Although he hasn’t been mentioned on this list, watch out for 17 year old Mikey Moore breaking through.

Saying that he’s the third most important player for Spurs might seem egregious but Son Heung Min remains one of the very few remnants of a pre Postecoglou era. Son is still great, scoring 17 goals and assisting 10 last season. But the role he has at the moment is far greater than just that.

Son is now the experienced one, the leader on the field. He’s the player a young team is going to look up to and he’s still the lynchpin of their attack. For all their attacking intent, Spurs still feel a little light on attacking talent and so a lot will depend on the South Korean.

#2 Cristian Romero

If you watched him play for Argentina in the Copa America, you’d make a case for him being the best centre back in the world. The version he exhibits for Spurs hasn’t always been at that level, but it is still very, very good. His partnership with Micky Van den Ven has been great to watch for the Spurs fans.

Romero is a fighter, an agressive no nonsense centre back who also excels in possession. His driving runs up the pitch often spur the Lilywhites on when they become static. The only bit of him that you can criticise with Romero is that he gets over aggressive at times and is prone to a card.

#1 Dominic Solanke

Earlier this month, Spurs signed Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth for a sum of £65m. While the fee might be steep, this signing is a proof of excellent profiling and it is very likely to be a hit. He is going to be their missing piece.

After Harry Kane left, Spurs didn’t directly replacing and thus despite all their attacking intent, they struggled in front of goal. While Kane’s shoes at Spurs are unrealistic ones to fill, Solanke is no slouch as his 19 league goals from last season show. Expect an exciting partnership with Son to blossom as the two match each other’s abilities quite well.
