Crystal Palace 1-1 Newcastle Player Ratings as Daniel Muñoz finds late leveler for the hosts to secure a vital point for the Eagles
With the Premier League starting to get to the midway point of the season, we have games coming up thick and fast as we approach the winter period. As for this weekend, one of the earlier kickoffs sees Newcastle visit Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace. Whilst Newcastle has been slightly hit or miss for most of the season so far, Crystal Palace has struggled to get going and is currently sitting in the relegation spot.
Despite their lackluster form, Crystal Palace remains a competitive outfit and has caused teams trouble. Playing at home, the Eagles came flying out at the start of the game, really pressuring the Newcastle defense and physically imposing themselves, which eventually saw Newcastle talisman Alexander Isak depart by the first quarter of the game. Having taken their time to grow into the game, Newcastle ended the first half as the team in the ascendancy, managing to hold on after Palace squandered a couple of big chances.
Newcastle, having grown into the game by the end of the first half, continued to push the pace, finding a breakthrough after Anthony Gordon’s close-range cross was turned in by Marc Guehi. Despite the setback, Palace did more than enough to give themselves a way back into the game. However, a host of closely missed chances along with sustained pressure from the visitors meant that it took Palace until the near end of stoppage time to find their equaliser.
All in all, the game made for an enthralling end-to-end contest which saw Palace put together good chances and really give the Newcastle defense a lot to work for. Whilst the goal they conceded can be attributed to a momentary lapse of concentration, their relentlessness to fight for the equalizer made the contest all the more enjoyable. That said, both sides will now look to build on their learnings from the game into midweek.
Crystal Palace Player Ratings vs Newcastle
Goalkeeper
Dean Henderson: 6/10- Quite shocking with his distribution and passing at times. Led to a couple of nervy moments after coming way out of his box for the ball, thankfully not leading to any mishaps. Should have done better to deal with the low cross through his legs that led to the own goal.
Defenders
Tyrick Mitchell: 6.5/10- Somehow the worst out of a very resolute backline on the night. Was easily dribbled past a couple of times and made a couple of very rash challenges. While he was lucky to stay on, he made good on that by trying to help his team further up the pitch, delivering some enticing crosses as well.
Marc Guéhi: 7.5/10- Had a captain’s performance on the night, physical and imposing with his challenges. Was unfortunate to have conceded the own goal but did not let it affect him, delivering a majestic cross for his side’s late equalizer.
Maxence Lacroix: 7.5/10- Another solid performance from the new recruit who was at the heart of the defense, setting the tone with his physicality and roughness from the get-go. Was hardly troubled by the Newcastle attackers and even got in great positions to try and get a goal himself.
Trevoh Chalobah: 7/10- Had an exemplary performance at the back, actively charging into tackles and collecting loose balls as well. Was confident in possession, charging forward at times which led to him creating a big chance for his side as well. Truly an all-round performance from the defender.
Daniel Muñoz: 7.5/10- Did well to make up for his misses prior to the all-important equalizer. Ran himself ragged up and down the flanks trying to make a difference for his side in whatever way possible. Rightly rewarded for his efforts after turning in a difficult cross with his head. Was in the running for one of the best players on the pitch before his goal as well.
Midfielders
Will Hughes: 6.5/10- Had an energetic and industrious performance in the middle of the park, often picking up the ball near his own box, but managing to turn away into space quite comfortably. Managed to get stuck in quite often, and on the flip side managed to deliver some good dead balls into the box, which his teammates should have done better with.
Jefferson Lerma: 7/10- Excellent for the most part in the middle of the park, complimenting Hughes well, and did the heavy lifting when it came to intercepting passes or jumping on loose balls. Hardly put a foot wrong all game and was crucial to his side having nearly 50% of possession.
Attackers
Eberechi Eze: 7/10- One of the best players for his side on the night, looking to pick the ball up as much as possible before trying to create something or initiate a move. A slightly better touch could have yielded him a goal, and quite possibly set the tempo for his side. Still, did well to contribute and atone for his mistake thereon.
Ismaïla Sarr: 7/10- Another one of Palace’s better players who had quite a few chances at trying to get his side ahead and later equalize for them once behind. Could well have had a couple of goals and an assist on the night but was somehow denied by fine margins each time. Kept at it throughout trying to claw through the Newcastle defense.
Jean-Philippe Mateta: 6/10- Couldn’t really make a mark on the night or make his presence felt despite the ball falling to him in key areas at times. Positioned himself well but could not make the chances count, missing the killer touch needed to put the ball in the net.
Substitutes
Justin Devenny: 6.5/10- Initially brought on closer to the striker before moving into midfield to accommodate further substitutions. Wasn’t afraid to get stuck in and showed glimpses of real quality in moments.
Eddie Nketiah: N/A
Jeffrey Schlupp: N/A
Manager
Oliver Glasner: 7/10- Showed a real belief in his side and set them up to play to their strengths. Was very effective in his management and deserved a bit of fortune after the performance his side had put in. Still has a long way to go though considering Palace’s current woes.
Newcastle Player Ratings vs Crystal Palace
Goalkeeper
Nick Pope: 6.5/10- Made a couple of big saves and bailed out his side during both halves. Showed great positioning and awareness with regards to how much he committed to loose balls. Seemed relatively comfortable coming out to claim the ball or making space for himself during set pieces, and was mostly solid barring the fumble for Palace’s goal at the end.
Defenders
Lewis Hall: 6/10- Not his best performance considering he was bypassed on occasion with his man moving centrally to make space for the wingback. Was caught in two minds on occasion, which led to an error, and couldn’t really produce the required quality with some of his crosses.
Dan Burn: 7.5/10- Busy day at the office for the big man who was solid in defense, making a vital clearance off the line to top off his excellent defensive performance. Put himself about during set pieces but couldn’t really get his head to anything substantial.
Fabian Schar: 7/10- Excellent in defense and comfortable playing out from the back. Did well to complement Burn’s defensive efforts by getting stuck in as well, making a few vital blocks and tackles to deny the Palace attackers. Was involved during set pieces as well.
Valentino Livramento: 6.5/10- Energetic, and a presence going forward but couldn’t complement that defensively. Was dribbled past on a couple of occasions but recovering well.
Midfielders
Joe Willock: 6.5/10- Tried hard but could not really find anything of substance from the game. Was quick with his feet at times but was lacking defensively, which allowed Palace to do better in the midfield battle.
Bruno Guimarães: 6.5/10- Unusually quiet game for the Brazilian who at times was unable to cope with Palace’s pace and movement. Was mostly visible going forward and then too was getting caught by the opposition on a number of occasions.
Sandro Tonali: 7/10- Probably had the most to offer out of the Newcastle midfield, driving forward and getting stuck in and doing the dirty work as well. Was initiating moves from deep but often to no avail.
Attackers
Anthony Gordon: 7.5/10- Continued his good form with another goal contribution. Slightly fortunate with the deadlock-breaker that was ultimately ruled as an own goal, having come off a Palace player but was well worked by the young Englishman. Showed great energy and activity throughout, at times delivering some very good crosses into the box.
Alexander Isak: 6/10- Looked lively and agile when the ball was played into him, seemingly comfortable trying to dribble out of close places. Was cleaned out on a couple of occasions and was moving quite gingerly very early on. Despite his best efforts could not carry on, having been barged into on a number of occasions, eventually experiencing discomfort on his right hip.
Joelinton: 6/10- Quite in and out of the game, at times struggling to find his footing. Could not get involved in the game, especially after Isak’s departure, and only made an appearance as a target man during set pieces for his side.
Substitutes
Harvey Barnes: 6/10- Couldn’t really affect the game and was at times isolated away from the game. Should have done better in possession and utilized his best attributes. Did not pose the threat that he usually does or pop up with any significant contribution despite a long while on the pitch.
Sean Longstaff: N/A
Callum Wilson: N/A
Manager
Eddie Howe: 6.5/10- Did not adapt well to the circumstances and could not impact the game with any of the changes. Was rather fortuitous in how his side got the lead but in the end, a draw was more indicative of their efforts. Will need to reinvent the forward line, especially with his star striker out.
