Barcelona 3-0 Brest Player Ratings: Lewandowski reaches milestone in comfortable win against the French outfit
Robert Lewandowski’s double powered Barcelona to a comprehensive 3-0 win against Brest in the Champions League group stage, with the victory also ending the Catalans’ two-match winless run. The Blaugrana wasted no time in establishing their dominance after Robert Lewandowski won a penalty before converting it from the spot. The strike also marked the Polish striker’s 100th in UCL, becoming the third ever to do so after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Barca continued to enjoy a lion’s share of possession while creating numerous dangerous opportunities but couldn’t change their fragile lead. It took until the 66th minute for the hosts to establish a two-goal cushion when Dani Olmo scored a brilliant goal off Gerard Martin’s cross. Lewandowski scored his second of the night in injury time to cap off a great performance as well as a dominant victory for Hansi Flick’s men.
The win marked Barca’s fourth consecutive in the Champions League this season as they are second in the standings with 12 points, only 1 point behind Inter Milan.
Barcelona Player Ratings vs Brest
Goalkeeper
Inaki Pena: Was barely troubled by Brest’s attackers and his passing and sweeping prowess were brilliant
Defenders
Gerard Martin: 8/10 – A sublime performance from the young confidence to lift his morale. Martin repaid the trust shown by Flick with a complete display. Set up Olmo with a precise low-cross and created 3 big chances while making 7 recoveries
Inigo Martinez: 7/10 – Yet another commanding performance from Martinez, who continues to grow in stature. Completed the most touches in the game and his passing was immaculate. Defensively, he was robust, winning 3 duels and 3 tackles.
Pau Cubarsi: 7/10 – The 17-year-old completed the most long balls in the game (13) and hardly flinched in his defensive duties apart from his top-class passing game.
Jules Kounde: 5/10 – The French right-back looked far from his best yet again as if he hadn’t recovered from a disastrous outing against Celta Vigo over the mark. His crosses were substandard.
Midfielders
Marc Casado: 7/10 – Casadon rose to the occasion once against, hardly putting a foot wrong as the holding midfielder. Circulated the ball well with an outstanding passing accuracy of 98%. Created 2 big chances and his long-balls were inch-perfect. Although he was a tad slow at times, his ball-winning abilities were on display.
Pedri: 8/10 – Pedri produced another masterclass, excelling on all fronts. Chipped in a lofted ball to Lewandowski before he was fouled to win a penalty. His work rate was excellent, winning a game-high 12 duels. Completed 4 dribbles and delivered 17 passes into the final third.
Fermin Lopez: 6/10: Lopez proved to be a menace as he kept on knocking the defence by getting into the dangerous positions. However, he was unlucky with his finishing as he missed 2 big chances.
Attackers
Dani Olmo: 8/10 – Olmo showcased his quality again on a Champions League night and what he could bring into the table if given a continuous run. Slalomed his way past Chardonnet for a brilliant goal and created 2 big chances
Raphinha: 7/10 – Even without finding the score sheet, Raphinha was a nightmare for Brest’s defence, creating 4 big chances.
Robert Lewandowski: 9/10 – Lewandowski couldn’t have asked for a better performance to celebrate a historic night. Showed absolute composure from the penalty box and his predatory instincts for his second goal. Also created a big chance for Lopez with a stunning back-heel flick.
