Frank Lampard is a former English midfielder who played in the Premier League for a major part of his career. After hanging his boots, Lampard turned to the sidelines as an EFL and EPL teams manager. He is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world. Following his interim manager stint, Lampard has yet to sign a deal with any football club.

Lampard is the son of West Ham United legend Frank Lampard Sr. The 46-year-old played for top-flight clubs, including Chelsea, West Ham United, and Manchester City. He also donned the three lions on his chest, playing for his nation’s U21, B, and senior teams. Frank Lampard started his managerial career with EFL side Derby County four years after his retirement. He also returned to his former club, Chelsea, as a manager.

Club Career

Frank began his career by following in his father’s footsteps. He joined West Ham United’s youth team in 1994. Scottish striker Frank McAvennie, who also played for West Ham United, was another reason behind this decision. Just a year later, Lampard signed for the senior team. Frank Lampard Sr. was the side’s assistant coach at that time. He was loaned off to Swansea City in October 1995, where he made his professional debut. Frank scored his first senior career goal against Brighton & Hove Albion with Swansea City. 

After only nine games, Lampard returned to West Ham in January 1996. His first game for West Ham was against Coventry City. In his first season with West Ham United’s senior squad, he made only two appearances, both as a substitute. Frank Lampard got the chance to begin a game for West Ham’s clash against Arsenal in his second season. However, his first start didn’t end well, as his side lost 2-0 to the Gunners.

Later that season, he suffered a broken leg and also earned his first booking. He was also mocked by West Ham fans, making him consider giving up on the game. However, the English midfielder returned next season and scored a winner against Barnsley after coming off the bench for the final 15 minutes. He led West Ham to fifth place finish in the Premier League and earned them a qualification to the UEFA Europa League in the 1998-99 season. 

Frank went on to spend three more season at the Premier League club. But, his father wasn’t treated well by West Ham and he decided to part ways with the club. He also didn’t want to be known as “Frank Lampard Sr.’s son” and wanted to have an identity of himself. 

Chelsea signed Frank Lampard in 2001 for £11 million. The midfield maestro became a regular starter at the club and began to etch his name in the history books. He debuted for Chelsea against Newcastle United in the first game of the 2001-2002 season. He managed to find the net eight times in his first season at Chelsea. 

Lampard was crucial in Chelsea’s second-place finish in the 2003-04 season. He made it to the PFA Team of the Year as well. In the UEFA Champions League, Frank scored four goals in 14 outings as Chelsea got knocked out by Monaco in the semi-finals. The 2004-05 season saw the best of Lampard to date. He led the charts with 18 assists and scored 13 goals in the Premier League. His two goals against Bolton Wanderers sealed the Premier League title for Chelsea. The team crashed out of the Champions League to Liverpool in the semi-finals yet again.

Frank stepped up his game further the following season. He led his side to consecutive Premier League titles as Chelsea’s top scorer with 16 goals. He finished second behind Ronaldinho for both FIFA POTY and Ballon d’Or. After winning another Premier League in 2009-10, four FA Cups, two Football League Cups, two FA Community Shields, UEFA Champions League in 2011-12, and UEFA Europa League in 2012-13, Lampard parted ways with Chelsea in 2014. 

In his first and only season at Manchester City, Lampard played 32 games and found the net on six occasions. He became only the second athlete to make 600 Premier League appearances that year. For the final show, Frank joined MLS club New York City FC. He bid the football field goodbye after playing 29 games and scoring 15 goals for the MLS side.

International Career

While having a decorated club career, Lampard also ran the show for his national team. He played five games for the England U18 side before making his debut for the U21 team on November 13, 1997. He managed to beat the goalkeeper nine times in 19 games. 

Frank Lampard made his senior team debut on October 10, 1999, in a friendly game against Belgium. He wasn’t called up for a major tournament until UEFA Euro 2004. He played a key role in England’s 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, scoring five goals. However, the CM didn’t bag any goals in the World Cup despite playing every game. The Three Lions were knocked out in the quarterfinals on Penalties.

In the 2010 World Cup, Lampard’s goal against Germany didn’t count despite crossing the line due to a referee error. Frank made a record 37 shots on goal without scoring at a FIFA World Cup. Lampard represented his nation at the 2014 World Cup after becoming the eighth player to earn 100 caps for England. Lampard retired from International football on August 26, 2014.

Lampard began his managerial career with Championship club Derby County in May 2018. He guided his side to an away win in his first game as a manager. But Derby County lost the second game 4-1 to Leeds United. The first major win for Lampard was against Manchester United as his team got the better of the Red Devils in the EFL Cup. Derby County finished the season in 6th place and made it to the Championship play-offs. However, Aston Villa came out victorious in the final game of the play-offs.

Frank Lampard came back to the club where he spent most years as a player in July 2019. He lost the first game to Manchester United in the EPL and then to Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup. Under him, Chelsea finished fourth in the Premier League and were the runners-up in the FA Cup. The club sacked him in January 2021 after they dropped to the middle of the table despite a great start. 

Everton handed the command to Lampard in January 2022. The club was on the brink of relegation, but Frank’s arrival ensured that Everton stayed in the Premier League. It didn’t go according to plan for the next season either, and Lampard was sacked by Everton a week before he could complete a year at the club.

Chelsea brought Lampard back to the wheel as a caretaker manager following Graham Potter’s sacking. But it got even worse, and the club finished in the latter half of the table for the first time in 28 years.

Lampard prefers 3-4-2-1 and 4-3-3 formations. He also used the 5-4-1 formation in some of his games with Everton. He likes his team to keep the possession and make smooth attacking transitions. Frank fancies using the width and pushes his players to keep things consolidated while attacking.

As a player, Lampard won his first trophy, UEFA Intertoto Cup, with West Ham United in 1999. He went on to win three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two Football League Cups, two FA Community Shields, UEFA Champions League in 2011-12, and UEFA Europa League in 2012-13 with Chelsea. 

Frank Lampard earned numerous individual honors as well. He was 2005 FWA Footballer of the Year, 2008 UEFA Midfielder of the Year and was also named the England Player of the Year twice. He was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2021.
