A devastating event shook the football world on November 11, as Ecuadorian youngster Marco Angulo sadly passed away following a car crash. The 22-year-old, who was on loan at his country club Quito from MLS outfit FC Cincinnati, was involved in a fatal car accident on 7 October in the south of Quito, leaving him with severe head injuries and lung contusion. He had since been placed in an artificial coma but succumbed to his injuries on Monday. The accident also killed his friend and Independiente del Valle player Roberto Cabezas, who was the driver of the car.

FC Cincinnati expressed their condolences, stating “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Marco—a husband and father, a brother and son, a friend and teammate. He was a joyful, kind young man who lit up every room he entered. Our entire club grieves this tragedy, and we are thinking of and praying for his family. He was a cherished member of the FC Cincinnati family, and he will be missed.”

Meanwhile, a statement from the Ecuadorian Football Association read: “Marco was not only an outstanding player but also a great team-mate. He leaves a deep sorrow in our hearts, especially in those of us who went with him on countless trips, and to training camps and matches. 

“Rest in peace, Angulito.”

Born in Esmeraldas, northwest Ecuador, Marco Angulo spent his youth ranks at Independiente del Valle. After impressing with the club’s reserves team, Independiente Juniors, Angulo broke into the first team in 2021. Playing as a defensive midfielder, Angulo quickly became a key cog of Independiente del Valle, making 45 appearances in 2021 and 2022. He also played a big part in the Ecuadorian outfit winning the U-20 Copa Libertadores in 2020, Serie A de Ecuador in 2021, and the Copa Ecuador and the Copa Sudamericana in 2022.

Angulo’s impressive form caught the attention of Major League Soccer outfit FC Cincinnati, who signed him for $3 million in 2023. However, the start to his spell in the United States didn’t pan out well as he struggled to nail down a regular spot at FC Cincinnati, making only 9 starts out of 24 games in his debut MLS season.

The Ecuadorian midfielder opted for a loan spell to his country club L.D.U Quito earlier this March until the end of the year, with the Ecuadorian capital outfit having the option to buy. He had made 20 appearances for Quito before the tragic car accident claimed his life.
