Real Madrid 5-2 Borussia Dortmund Player Ratings as Vinicius inspires stunning come-back for the hosts

Real Madrid produced an incredible 5-2 comeback victory against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League group stage game, thanks to a stellar hat-trick from Vinicius Junior. Los Blancos shockingly found themselves on the back foot after Donyell Malen and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens scored back-to-back goals in the first half, putting Dortmund in a strong position.

However, the tables were turned in the second half, with Dortmund getting rattled against Real’s increased intensity. Antonio Rudiger pulled back one before Vinicius equalised after nodding the ball into an empty net. Lucas Vazquez scored a thunderous goal to put the Spanish giants ahead before Vinicius ran riot against Dortmund’s hapless defence to complete his hat-trick, thus putting the game to bed.

Thibaut Courtois: 5/10 – Made a terrific save against Julian Brandt’s thunderous strike but was let down by his defenders for the two goals

Defenders

Antonio Rudiger: 6/10 – Rudiger was far from his best in the first half. Should have done better to stop Guirassy from passing to Mallen for Dortmund’s opener. But he made amends by scoring a powerful header in the second half

Eder Militao: 6/10 – Militao exhibited his great passing skills while remaining solid in the defence.

Ferland Mendy: 4/10 A lacklustre display from the French left-back, who was found wanting for Dormund’s two goals in the first half. Was ball-watching when Guirassy assisted the opener and was beaten by Malen before the Dutch forward laid off a cross to Bynoe-Gittens for the second.

Lucas Vazquez: 6/10 – Vazquez was at fault for Dortmund’s two goals in the first half, having lost the ball in the build-up to the opener and was caught off-guard by Bynoe-Gittens for the second. But he seized his moment to become a hero after whipping in a great strike into the top-left corner.

Midfielders

Luka Modric: 6/10- Modric continues to defy his age as he produced another brilliant performance. Acted as a creative hub and tempo setter for Los Blancos and above all, his defensive work rate was quite astonishing, given he is on the brink of his 40s.

Federico Valverde: 6/10 – Played slightly deeper than usual and was offered no room to showcase his scoring prowess

Jude Bellingham: 6/10 Bellingham nodded a tame header from close range off Vinicius’ excellent long ball and also hit the woodwork, with the ball just falling on the goal line. But made a great tackle to set up Vinicius’ winning goal.

Attackers

Rodrygo: 6/10 – Rodrygo’s impressive work rate was on display although he failed to find the score sheet. Kept the ball in play in the build-up to Vazquez’s goal

Vinicius Junior: 9/10 – The Brazilian dynamo put in a monstrous performance to put Dortmund to the sword singlehandedly. Found an empty net for Real’s equaliser and scored two more sensational goals, marked by his his trademark run on the left flank, leaving defenders in his trail with his unmatchable pace and wizardry.

Kylian Mbappe: 6/10 – The French forward’s relentless efforts need to be applauded despite not scoring a goal. Set up Rudiger with a great cross.

Carlo Ancelotti: 7/10 – Ancelotti showed once again why his side can’t be written off at any point even though the odds might be stacked against them. Los Blancos’ winning mentality in the second half inspired them to a great comeback, which continues to be one of the hallmarks of the Italian gaffer.

Gregor Kobel: 4/10 – Made two fine saves but failed to hold the nerves with his distribution when Real started to breathe down Dortmund’s neck. The Swiss keeper couldn’t help from falling victim to the Spanish side’s unreal intensity.

Defenders

Niklas Sule: 4/10 – Should be doing better to deny Rudiger’s header. Failed to marshall the defence when needed in the second half. Was dumbfounded by Vinicius for his second goal.

Nico Schlotterbeck: 7/10 – One of the bright spots in an otherwise awful defence. Made a flurry of blocks and interceptions to keep the scoreline a less damaging one for Dortmund.

Ramy Bensebaini: 6/10 – Was one of the hardworking players of Dortmund but failed to withstand the incessant pressure from Real towards the end

Julian Ryerson: 4/10 – A contrasting performance from Dortmund full-back, who was one of the best players on the pitch in the first half but regressed massively after the break. Played Vini Jr onside for Real’s second goal and was overwhelmed by the Brazilian’s relentless pace and skills in the second half.

Midfielders

Felix Nmecha: 7/10 – A terrific performance from the German midfielder, who controlled the tempo of the game brilliantly and was robust to overcome. Clocked up a passing accuracy of more than 90%, and won 6 duels and 4 tackles in the first half alone, including a sliding tackle to deny Rodrygo.

Marcel Sabitzer: 5/10 – Failed to make a big difference playing as one of the double pivots

Julian Brandt: 5/10 – Gifted the ball to Lucas Vazquez in a messed-up clearance before Real’s third goal.

Attackers

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens: 7/10 – Continued his red-hot form with a great strike in the first half and Dortmund started to play badly after he was taken off early in the second half as a tactical move

Donyell Malen: 7/10 – Malen emerged as Dortmund’s hero with a stunning performance against one of the difficult opponents. Showed great composure before burying the ball into the nets past Thibaut Courtois for the opening strike and assisted Bynoe-Gittens with a great cross

Serhou Guirassy: 5/10 – Guirassy’s efforts off the ball created problems for Real in the first half but was stranded for the entirety of the second period.
