Peru vs Uruguay Preview

Tournament: FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers

Date: Saturday, October 12, 2024

Time: 1:30 am GMT

Venue: Estadio Nacional de Lima

As the CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup Qualifiers resume this month, Uruguay will face Peru at Estadio Nacional de Lima on Saturday. The teams will look to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to take place in the US, Mexico, and Canada.

Peru are at the bottom of the standings after eight games and are yet to win a single match. They have three draws and five defeats and appear unlikely to be able to qualify for the upcoming edition of the World Cup. They are the only team in the CONMEBOL group not to have won a single game.

Uruguay, meanwhile, are third in the table behind Argentina and Colombia in that order. They have four wins, three draws, and one defeat in eight games. They are just three points behind Argentina and will look to qualify as table toppers. La Celeste have been excellent under Marcelo Bielsa and Peru will have a tough test against them.

Edison Flores is likely to take place in the starting XI in place of Gianluca Lapadula, who is out injured. Flores has been an important player for Peru in their history, scoring 16 goals and providing five assists in 76 games across competitions so far.

The 30-year-old plays for Peruvian side Club Universitario de Deportes on loan from Mexican club Atlas. He’s scored nine goals and provided five assists in 34 games across competitions in the 2023-24 season. He also scored in his last match against Comerciantes Unidos.

Manuel Ugarte has had a roller coaster of a few months at the club level. He left Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after just one year in the summer and eventually joined Manchester United. However, he hasn’t had the best of starts at the club so far.

Ugarte has struggled to help an underperforming Manchester United side and has even been at a mistake for a few goals they’ve conceded. He will now look to regain his form at the international level with Uruguay.

Ugarte has been an important player for La Celeste, having made 23 appearances so far.

They don’t have a single win in their last five games across competitions with three wins and two draws. In fact, their last competitive victory came in 2022!

Uruguay, meanwhile, also have zero wins in their last six games across competitions with five draws and one loss. They recently won the bronze medal at Copa America 2024 after beating Canada on penalties in the third-placed match. They lost 1-0 against Colombia in the semi-finals.

Uruguay could finally get their win after a run of six games on Saturday. They are 11th in the FIFA World Rankings and are likely to see off Peru comfortably.
