Newcastle help out AFC Wimbledon in brilliant gesture

In what was a fantastic gesture, Newcastle United donated £15,000 to AFC Wimbledon who they were scheduled to play in the Carabao Cup. The match however did not take place because of the pitch being in extremely poor condition.

Images emerged of the pitch being in a dreadful, unplayable stage, due to flood damage. The tie will now be played at St James’ Park and Wimbledon will also receive 45% of the proceeds from that match. A GoFundMe was started to help Wimbledon fund a new pitch to which the Magpies donated a big amount.

AFC Wimbledon plays in the Cherry Road stadium in London which has suffered ‘significant damage’ after the nearby River Wandle broke its banks on Sunday night. More than 100,000 liters of water has been pumped out of AFC Wimbledon’s flooded home after the entire stadium was left underwater, as per the club’s managing director James Woodroof.

Their League Two home game against Crewe Alexandra has been postponed in the wake of the incident, while the club are hoping to stage Saturday’s league game against Accrington Stanley at another venue in south London, Woodroof said.

Newcastle meanwhile will have a Premier League fixture against Manchester City to contend with, before they take on Wimbledon in what is their first game of October. Eddie Howe’s side were dealt a crushing loss by Fulham in their last game, winning 3-1 at home. Although before this match they were unbeaten this season, Newcastle’s performances haven’t really been the best.
