Bayern Munich to honour Beckenbauer by renaming street towards stadium

Bayern Munich is all set to celebrate Beckenbauer’s achievements by renaming Stadium Street.

Munich City Council has given the nod to rename the street beside Allianz Arena under football legend Franz Beckenbauer, who passed away earlier this year. The street, which was known as Werner Heisenberg Allee, will now be called Franz Beckenbauer Platz. This means the stadium, which will host the Champions League final in May 2025, will officially be located at Franz Beckenbauer Platz 5 — a remembrance of his famous shirt number. Also known as ‘Der Kaiser’ Beckenbauer was known for his authoritative playing style, sadly passed away aged 78 in January and the changes will take effect on the same month next year January 7, 2025.

“Naming a street is the highest honour that the city of Munich can bestow posthumously and a sign of the deep respect and appreciation that we have for Franz Beckenbauer,” Mayor Dieter Reiter said in a statement.

A glittering career that included World Cup success both as a player and coach, along with the Euros and the Ballon d’Or, claimed his status as one of the greats.
During his 13-year stay at Bayern, the local boy of Munich won three European Cups and four German titles, earning another with Hamburg in 1981-82.

There are also arrangements to immortalize him with a statue outside the stadium alongside his teammate Gerd Mueller.

Reiter called Beckenbauer “one of the greatest athletes our city has ever produced”

“With his sporting successes and his commitment to football, he has left a lasting mark on Germany’s sporting landscape. His calm, humorous manner and his way of expressing himself will forever remain part of the Munich attitude to life.”
