Denmark vs Switzerland Preview

  • Tournament: UEFA Nations League.
  • Date: Thursday, September 5.
  • Kickoff Time: 6:45 PM GMT.
  • Venue: Parken, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Denmark vs Switzerland will be the first game of League A Group 4 in this year’s UEFA Nations League, with Serbia and Spain making the other two teams in the pool.

The Danes arguably outdid themselves in the last cycle of this tournament, finishing second behind Croatia by a point in League A Group 1, finishing ahead of France in the process. Things did not go very smoothly at Euro 2024 either as they somehow made it past the group stages despite three draws in as many games. However, they fell 2-0 to hosts Germany in the round of 16 and bowed out.

Kasper Hjumland and his men will enter the Nations League with a strong resolve to prove themselves yet again and will look to begin their campaign with a win.

The Swiss, on the other hand, were part of a tightly-contested group alongside eventual winners Spain (11pts) and runners-up Portugal (10pts) in League A Group 2 last time out. They won half their games and lost the other half in a decent performance. This continued at Euro 2024, where they were runners-up to hosts Germany in their group and also defeated Italy in the round of 16, before falling to England in penalties in the quarter-finals.

Murat Yakin and his strong and settled squad will look to put their best foot forward once again and prove they are ready to be included among Europe’s elite.

Hjumland has made a few key changes to the squad, whilst retaining the majority of the players who travelled to Germany for Euro 2024. One of the main omissions is that of Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund, who is currently nursing a hamstring injury picked up in July whilst on national duty. However, other experienced players such as Christian Eriksen, Yussuf Poulsen, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg all cut and will look to perform well.

The major news coming out of the Swiss camp is that the team will see a new starting goalkeeper in the squad for the first time in several years following Yann Sommer’s retirement post-Euros. Apart from that, Yakin has retained the same midfielders and attackers as they look to go from strength to strength concerning their performances in major international tournaments. Players such as Granit Xhaka, Breel Embolo, and Manuel Akanji have all made the cut.

Key Players to Watch in Denmark vs Switzerland

Christian Eriksen (Denmark)

The Danish maestro will be relied upon by his teammates to pull the strings from midfield and make things happen for his teammates. His passing ability and vision would prove key for the rest of the attackers to get going as the entire team depends on Eriksen to create special moments.

Granit Xhaka (Switzerland)

In a game where the midfield battle is likely to determine the outcome, or at least which way the match could go, Xhaka will play a crucial role. Usually deployed at the heart of his team’s midfield, Xhaka’s long passes and hard tackles make him invaluable to his team. He also has a knack for scoring the odd stunner from long-range which could come in handy in tight games.

Denmark vs Switzerland Prediction

While Denmark have a good team on paper, they seem to lack proper cohesion in the final third and often struggle to create chances once the opposition figures their patterns out. This could cause problems against an experienced and ruthless Swiss side, who will undoubtedly go for the kill as soon as they sense the opportunity in this game. The visitors should narrowly edge this one.

Prediction: Denmark 1-2 Switzerland.
