Postecoglou believes Spurs ‘should have got something’ from Newcastle loss

Manager Ange Postecoglou believes that his Spurs side deserved more from their Premier League game against Newcastle United on Sunday which eventually ended in a 2-1 loss. This means that Tottenham go into the international break 10th on the table, with a win, draw and a loss each to their name.

“Yeah, obviously we should have got something from the game,” the Australian said. ‘It’s very similar to our first away game (at Leicester which ended 1-1) where we controlled it for the most part. We just needed to kill it off and we didn’t.”

“The second goal was disappointing. We switched off but it should have been well over by then,” he continued. “So it’s another sore one, unfortunately, where we haven’t got the rewards for our play. But it’s three strong performances from our first three games. The results don’t reflect that.” Spurs take on Arsenal next in an exciting North London Derby on 15th September when the club season restarts after the international break.

Spurs were on the back foot in the first half itself against the Magpies with Harvey Barnes scoring to give the home side the lead. Spurs equalised in the second half when Dan Burn turned an effort from Brennan Johnson into his own net. But it was Eddie Howe’s side as Alexander Isak scored the winner in a move that caught the Spurs’ backline napping. Postecoglou’s side had their chances, as demonstrated by the 20 shots they had, but failed to score more than once. The return of new signing Dominic Solanke from injury will be a much anticipated one.
