OFFICIAL: Southampton has completed the signing of Flynn Downes

Southampton has confirmed the return of midfielder Flynn Downes who spent the last season on loan from West Ham United and was influential in helping Saints earn promotion to the English top flight. Downes will sign a four-year contract with the newly-promoted English side.

The 25-year-old midfielder started 35 of his 37 appearances for the Saints last season and has made his move permanent at St Mary’s for a reported £18m. Prior to his move to Southampton, Downes played 35 times for the Hammers.

“We’re thrilled to bring Flynn back,” said manager Russell Martin. “It was a big priority for us this summer and to get it done early in pre-season is also really important for us.

“He was such an influential player for us last season, both on and off the pitch. He’s a brilliant character, he’s aggressive and physical in his play, technically excellent with the ball and a fantastic athlete too.”
