Why did Cristiano Ronaldo get a yellow card in the Euro 2024 match against Georgia?

Portugal’s captain Cristiano Ronaldo was booked after a constant dispute with the referee and was given a yellow card for the heated moment.

Wednesday’s Group F game was filled with high tension and frustration while Ronaldo’s efforts to score a goal in a 6th straight EURO is still on the waiting list. However, the highlight was the referee vs the Portuguese captain.

Ronaldo’s frustration was acceptable as the group stage ended with a shocking defeat to world No. 74 Georgia. Moreover, the upset is considered the biggest shock in tournament history based on rankings. These frustrating moments piled up as Ronaldo earned a yellow card for shouting at referee Sandro Schaerer when a penalty claim was denied even though the shirt pulling was so evident. Goncalo Ramos replaced him after 66 minutes, which left him annoyed.

Georgia secured a famous victory and an unexpected place in the knockout round, shaking up the round of 16 schedule. On the other side, Turkey went through by beating Czechia in a physical game at Hamburg, thus finishing second in the group due to the head-to-head stats against Portugal, despite both teams having six points.

Just two minutes into the match Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring for Georgia with a left-footed strike against a star-studded Portugal side, which included Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Joao Felix. Growing in confidence, Georgia pressed forward and won a penalty after a light contact in the 57th minute, confirmed by video replay which Mikautadze converted without error.

Portugal’s coach Roberto Martinez had hoped Ronaldo would finally open his goalscoring tally, with his closest effort coming from a free kick that saw but Georgia’s goalkeeper Mamardashvili denied it with ease.

Everything said and done the Portuguese finished the group as winners and will face Slovenia in the Round of 16 on Tuesday.
