Ciaran Brennan joins Newport County from Sheffield Wednesday

The 24-year-old defender has made his move to Newport County after 11 years with Championship club Sheffield Wednesday. He joined the Sheffield academy at the age of 13 and made his first senior appearance during the 2021-22 season.

Brennan became the second signing for Newport this summer after Anthony Glennon arrived from Grimsby Town. The Irishman has signed a two-year contract with The Exiles.

Last season, Brennan had a short loan spell with Hartlepool in the National League and managed only four appearances in December. He also enjoyed loan spells at Notts County and Swindon Town.

How has Ciaran Brennan reacted to his new transfer?

The former Republic of Ireland U-19 international has ended his 11-year association with Sheffield Wednesday to join EFL League Two club Newport County. He has made 18 appearances for Sheffield since making his debut for the senior squad in the 2021/22 campaign.

Brennan has struggled to gain regular minutes at the club and was sent out on loan several times in the last few seasons. But the defender is now excited to kickstart his career at Newport County.

“I had a couple of offers elsewhere,’’ admitted Brennan.

“But speaking to Huw and listening to what he wants to do with the club going forward; the philosophy he wants to put in place; and what he thinks the club can be, was a massive attraction to me. It will help me massively.

“This club is definitely going in the right direction.’’
