Bayer Leverkusen presented with special WWE titles for invincible Bundesliga season

German giants Bayer Leverkusen were the standout team of the 2023-24 football season as they scripted history with an unbeaten Bundesliga title last week. While the entire world noticed their success, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) also did not miss out as they presented the Bundesliga Champions with customised titles. In a fitting storyline, Bayer accepted the prize as their players were spotted with the titles in a social media post.

WWE presents Bayer with titles

In a social media post, WWE presented Bayer with the WWE Undisputed title which was put on the shoulders of star names Victor Bonafice and Edmond Tapsoba. The duo looked perfectly posed and could have challenged current champion Cody Rhodes with the look on their face. While Rhodes is flying high in WWE and is a leading name, both Tapsoba and Bonafice have also endured the same reputation.

Like Rhodes who had a breakthrough in 2024 when he brought the Roman Reigns story to an end at Wrestlemania in April, both Tapsoba and Bonafice have enjoyed the revival. They helped Bayer win their maiden Bundesliga title with a record points tally of 90 in 34 matches. Last Saturday after a 2-1 win over Augsburg they also became the first team to win the Bundesliga without losing a single game. Their name went down into the folklore of German football with that achievement.

They could have had a perfect season with another title to their name on Wednesday evening, however, a defeat to Atalanta in the Europa League final saw dreams shattered. Had they won the title, they could have been on course for a historic treble with them still to compete in the DFB Pokal final on coming Saturday (May 25).

Xabi Alonso’s epic season

Bayer’s coach Xabi Alonso has been at the center of the success and led the team from relegation battle to title winners in Germany. Alonso’s excellence has seen him linked with many jobs during the summer but he decided to stay.

He will now look to end the season on a high with the DFB Pokal final against Kaiserslautern. If Bayer do win the Cup, it will also be their first Cup success in German football’s cup competition in the 21st century and could see them lift their second title of the season.

The defeat to Atalanta on Wednesday was Bayer’s first in 52 matches while also ending their run of 360 days without a loss. The 3-0 defeat was only the second time they failed to score in a competitive match this season.
