Taking a look at 8 managers who could land new jobs soon
With the summer transfer window around the corner, clubs are preparing their player recruitment strategies to the ‘T’ so as to be ahead of the competition. However, like any other valuable asset, managers too are in high demand this year, with several touted to be on the move.
High-profile vacancies at Bayern Munich and Chelsea have kick-started what seems to be a lengthy merry-go-round that could take up the whole summer as managers lock horns for similar roles. Without further ado, let’s take a look at eight managers who could be in new jobs soon.
8. Mauricio Pochettino
Chelsea sent shockwaves through the footballing community when they announced the ‘mutual termination’ of Pochettino’s contract on May 22. The Argentine guided the Blues to a respectable sixth-place finish in the Premier League this season, after languishing in the bottom half for the most part.
However, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly and the hierarchy believe Pochettino underperformed after the heavy investments made by the board last summer. As a result, they will now look towards a new, young manager, with Pochettino being linked with moves to Bayern and Manchester United in the meantime.
7. Thomas Tuchel
Thomas Tuchel will be vacating his role as Bayern Munich manager on June 1, having gone trophyless this season. His team finished third in the Bundesliga with 72 points, a whopping 18 points behind eventual champions Bayer Leverkusen. This marked the first time in 12 years that the Bavarians were not crowned champions, bringing an end to their dominance in Germany.
The club also asked Tuchel to stay after failures in seeking a replacement, but the German refused. He has been linked with a move to Old Trafford as well.
6. Vincent Kompany
Currently the surprise frontrunner for the job at the Allianz Arena is former Manchester City captain and current Burnley manager Vincent Kompany. The Belgian came into the spotlight after a thrilling 2022/23 season with Burnley in the Championship, finishing first with a staggering 101 points. They won the league by 10 points to earn promotion but could not compete with the Premier League big boys in their first season back.
As a result, the Clarets suffered relegation and speculation is growing about Kompany’s willingness to stay at the club. Perhaps with more resources he could reach his full potential as a coach.
5. Roberto De Zerbi
Another surprising managerial change in the Premier League took place just before final day as Brighton & Hove Albion announced De Zerbi’s exit following their defeat against Manchester United. The Italian will leave the Seagulls after just over a year in-charge, with several other posts opening up.
He was linked with the Manchester United job, but reports in his native Italy suggest otherwise. De Zerbi is a hot target for AC Milan, who have reportedly waited to let current manager Stefano Pioli finish the ongoing campaign, as a show of respect.
4. Kieran McKenna
The Irishman came into the spotlight this season with his brilliant run in the Championship to secure a second-placed finish and automatic promotion for Ipswich Town. They narrowly missed out on the title, finishing second to Leicester City by just a point, ending up with 96.
McKenna’s side finished as the top-scoring team in the division with their 92 goals, with little attention on defence as they shipped 57 goals. The highly-rated manager is now being backed to take the big step up to a bigger club, but he could remain in his current role for another season to test himself in the Premier League.
3. David Moyes
A true Premier League veteran manager, Moyes’ five-year spell with West Ham United has come to an end as the club have announced Julen Lopetegui as their head coach from next season. This leaves 61-year-old Moyes without a role, with multiple clubs that could use his expertise.
For starters, if McKenna were to leave Ipswich, there would be few better than Moyes to help oversee their first season back in the big time after so long. Moyes would also be a great option for the likes of Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, should their managers move elsewhere.
2. Rob Edwards
The Luton Town manager will look to be on the move after his inability to keep the Hatters afloat in the Premier League. They finished 18th with 26 points from 38 games and were six points behind Nottingham Forest, who showed great resilience in the run-in to stay up. Now, Edwards could look for a different role or may as well remain at Luton to try and bring them back up next season.
1. Erik ten Hag
The Manchester United manager has been under great scrutiny this season, especially after the run-in where the Dutchman saw his team slip down to eighth place as their final position. Now about to enter his third full season as manager, ten Hag has won just one trophy with the club and has not really given great momentum to the project.
Should the new ownership decide to part ways with him, a return to the Eredivisie seems like the most bankable option for ten Hag.
