Does Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking mark Thomas Tuchel’s return to Chelsea?
Things are escalating quickly at Fulham Road after Mauricio Pochettino agreed to leave Chelsea despite still having a one-year contract. Hours after the announcement, reports claimed that The Blues are considering to re-sign Thomas Tuchel.
Florian Plettenberg from Sky Sports reported: “A return to FC Chelsea is a concrete option for Tuchel, as he does not yet see his mission there as complete.” Tuchel is also reported to have been waiting for a call from Chelsea, refusing several offers including extending his stay with Bayern Munich.
Thomas Tuchel is not the only candidate
However, Tuchel is not the only name that appeared to surface for the candidacy. The newly-resigned tactician Roberto De Zerbi is also under the radar of the Clearlake Capital. All talks are still ongoing with an official announcement expected in days.
Tuchel left Chelsea after the current daily operational boss Todd Boehly asked him to do so back in September 2022. The decision was taken in the very morning after The Blues lost to Dinamo Zagreb while being in the competition as reigning champions. .
He is the second manager to be sacked when being the Champions League’s reigning champions after Roberto Di Matteo. Winning the Champions League allowed Tuchel’s Chelsea to play the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup which two of them were won.
The German is likely to leave Bayern after announcing it in February. Multiple reports suggested that FC Hollywood attempted to lure Tuchel in hope to stay but the outcome is unlikely to be materialised.
