Athletic Club vs Granada Preview

  • Date – Friday, April 19
  • Kick-off Time – 8:00 pm GMT
  • Venue – San Mames

Athletic Club will host relegation-threatened Granada in a crucial weekend clash in La Liga on Friday, April 19. Both sides are at the opposite ends of the table, with this game potentially being an easy three points for Ernesto Valverde’s side.

It was a historic night for Athletic Club when they won the Copa del Rey for the first time in over 40 years earlier this month. The Spanish giants are aiming to finish the season in the top four as they are only four points behind fourth-placed Atletico Madrid. Athletic have resumed their La Liga win campaign with a 1-1 draw against Villarreal over the weekend. The Basque outfit are looking to claim a Champions League spot for the first time since 2013-14.

Granada are sitting at 19th in the league table and are coming off a 2-0 home win against Alaves in its last game. The Los Nazaríes have been underperforming throughout the campaign and have struggled on their travels. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended in a stalemate between the two Spanish sides.

Athletic Club secured the Copa del Rey for the 24th time last weekend against Mallorca courtesy of a penalty shootout victory. Ernesto Valverde’s side are very much in the argument for a top-four finish this season as they are sitting just four points behind fourth-placed Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, Granada have been witnessing an underwhelming season as they struggled for consistency throughout the campaign. They are now 11 points away from the safety zone and a relegation seems more likely for Sandoval’s side. They have a tough trip to Athletic Bilbao this weekend and will also be taking on Real Madrid and Girona before the end of the campaign. Only last season they secured a promotion in Spain’s top-flight, but now will be dropping down into the second tier of the 2023/24 campaign.

Granda have the second-worst defensive record this season, shipping out 60 goals in 31 games for the Andalusians.

Predicted Score: Athletic Club 2-0 Granada
