Man United veteran Jonny Evans goes off injured against Liverpool
The Red Devils succumbed to a dramatic 4-3 defeat against Chelsea in their Premier League game at Stamford Bridge on Thursday. Defender Jonny Evans and fellow teammate Raphael Varane were passed fit for the midweek clash, with Varane starting alongside Harry Maguire at the heart of defense.
Latest update on Jonny Evans injury
The Frenchman came off with a groin injury towards the end of an exciting first half and was replaced by Manchester United veteran Jonny Evans.
But the Northern Irishman was taken off just after 20 minutes into his appearance with academy graduate Willy Kambwala coming on to replace him. The medical team needs to assess the duo to quantify the amount of damage as Ten Hag will plan for the upcoming clash against Liverpool.
If both Evans and Varane join Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof for the long term, Ten Hag will only have former skipper Harry Maguire and academy player Willy Kambwala as the only natural centre-back options.
Martinez and Lindelof will be unavailable for at least a month and United’s injury crisis deepens as we enter the final few weeks of the 2023/24 campaign.

Which defenders are available for Manchester United for the remainder of the season?
Victor Lindelof is set to be out for at least a month with a hamstring injury whereas Lisandro Martinez will be out for a similar period with a knee injury.
With Evans and Varane adding to the list, Harry Maguire will be the only senior centre-back available for Liverpool this weekend alongside academy graduate Willy Kambwala.
The likes of Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw are not expected to any minutes this season and it was reported that Ten Hag’s rigorous training program could be one of the reasons for United’s unnatural number of injuries.
Earlier it was reported that a section of Man United players are concerned about Erik ten Hag’s training methods. The club has suffered a wrath of injuries and his training methods demand too much from the players. But the manager claims fixture overload was to be blamed for some of the major injuries this season.
Ten Hag said: “No, we don’t train too hard. We need to be fit.
“The standards in this league, you need to be fit, otherwise you can’t match the standards that are required in a game. We don’t train too hard.”
