Real Madrid Midfielder Luka Modric Becomes Swansea City Minority Owner
Luka Modric is enjoying a pretty eventful 2024/25 season at Real Madrid, knowing all too well that it might be his final one for the club. However, the 37-year-old Croatian midfielder appears to be stepping into a different venture in the world of football by getting a taste of how it feels to have an ownership role within a club.
The Real Madrid midfielder is now set to become a minority owner for EFL Championship club, Swansea City. The Croatian never really played for the club nor does he have any close ties with them, but he looks to be ready to help them out financially by taking up a new management role, despite still being a professional footballer himself.
The Real Madrid midfielder expressed his joy after the announcement. Modric said, “I’m excited to be part of the journey.” The club statement stated, “Luka’s leadership, knowledge and passion for football will be key to the club’s ongoing development.”
Will Luka Modric’s Minority Ownership of Swansea City Impact His Real Madrid Career?
The 39-year-old might have interesting plans for the future, but this move will not have any impact on his playing career. Modric still wishes to continue playing for Real Madrid beyond the 2024-25 season. He is willing to sign a new contract extension if the club wants him to remain a part of their squad for the 2025-26 season and beyond.
Modric is poised to become one of the minority owners of Swansea City, who have an interesting ownership situation. That is because 7.59% of the ownership is claimed by the Swansea City Society Ltd, while 14.04% is owned by British businessman Nigel Morris. However, the majority of the Swansea City ownership is claimed by businessmen Andy Coleman, Brett Cavatt, and Jason Cohen, who together hold 77.41% of the ownership!
Coleman recently announced that he would be stepping down from his role as the club chairman at the end of the 2024-25 season. It seems like some of the Swansea owners are ready to sell their stakes, which can allow Modric to step in as one of the minority owners. Swansea City are currently in 12th place in the EFL Championship table, having picked up 54 points from 42 matches so far.
Luka Modric’s Career So Far
Luka Modric joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 and has been a pivotal player for them ever since. He has made 583 appearances for the club, scoring 43 goals and providing 83 assists in that ordeal. During his stint at the Santiago Bernabeu, the 39-year-old has won six UEFA Champions League titles, four La Liga titles, and the FIFA Club World Cup five times.
His biggest personal achievement, however, was winning the Ballon d’Or in 2018 after helping Real Madrid win the 2017/18 Champions League title. Modric has made 48 appearances in the ongoing campaign, scoring four goals and providing seven assists.
The Croatian would not be the first Real Madrid player to be the minority owner of a football club. Kylian Mbappe purchased a majority ownership stake in Ligue 2 club Caen in 2024, while Vinicius Jr also became a co-owner of Portuguese club FC Alverca earlier in 2025!
