Wankhede Stadium History
Wankhede Stadium has been one of the most iconic venues in India. The stadium has hosted several major matches and the fans have witnessed some of the greatest cricketing memories at this ground. The stadium is owned and operated by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). Mumbai Ranji Team plays their home matches on this ground. It is also the home stadium for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians (MI).
The stadium is located at the heart of the city and has been surrounded by the Marine Drive in the Churchgate. There are several old cricket clubs near the stadium, including Hindu Gymkhana, Parsi Gymkhana, and Cricket Club of India (CCI). This stadium was built after several controversies between CCI and the MCA over the allocation of tickets for cricket matches.
After a lot of controversy, the stadium was finally built in 1974. S. K. Wankhede, a politician and the secretary of the Mumbai Cricket Association, led the construction of the new stadium in South Mumbai near the Churchgate station, with Shashi Prabhu & Associates as architects and B.E. Billimoria & Co as constructors. It was named for Wankhede in 1974. The stadium hosted its first match with India playing West Indies in the final test in 1975.
The entire square is built of red soil, which provides additional bounce and makes batting slightly easier. Over the years, the pitch has traditionally benefited hitters over bowlers. It was reconfigured for both the 2011 and 2023 World Cups. The suspended cantilever roofs are one of the stadium’s most striking features. The Teflon fabric roof is lightweight and heat resistant. There is no beam support for the roof, ensuring that spectators enjoy a greater view.
Exhaust fans on the roof draw hot air from the stands while allowing a breeze from the west to pour in. The stadium includes 20 elevators for the north and south stands. This has been one of the main attractions of the stadium. The stadium had a capacity of 33,108. However, after renovations for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, the capacity was increased to 39,000.

Conclusion; Wankhede Stadium
Mumbai Indians (MI) are the joint most successful side in the IPL. They have won the titles back in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. But since then the side’s performance has been up and down. They failed to qualify for the playoffs in the previous season and there were controversies inside the team with Rohit Sharma being committed from the captaincy role and Hardik Pandya being made a captain.
However, the fans will this year appear in numbers to support the Blue Army and help their side to clinch the 6th title. Suryakumar Yadav will be leading the side for the first couple of games with Pandya not being fully fit.
