Eden Gardens History
Eden Gardens is the oldest stadium in India the second-largest cricket stadium in India and the third-largest in the world. It currently has a capacity of 68,000. The Cricket Association Of Bengal (CAB) currently operates the stadium. The stadium is the home ground of Bengal Ranji Team and the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). It is often referred to as the home of Indian cricket.
It has also been described as “cricket’s answer to the Colosseum.” and called the “Mecca of Indian cricket” because it was the first multi-purpose-built ground for the sport. Eden Gardens has held matches for significant international competitions like as the World Cup, World Twenty20, and Asia Cup. Eden Gardens hosted the second World Cup final in 1987. The stadium was built back in 1864.
As per reports, the stadium is named after the Eden Gardens park where it is located, itself named after the Eden sisters, Emily and Fanny, of Lord Auckland, the Governor-General of India (1836–1842). It was initially named the ‘Auckland Circus Gardens’, then the park was renamed to the ‘Eden Gardens in 1841. The cricket grounds were set up between Babughat and Fort William. The stadium is located in the B. B. D. Bagh area of the city. It is near the State Secretariat and across from the Calcutta High Court.
The venue hosted the first Test match between England and India in 1934. The first One Day International between India and Pakistan in 1987. Then first T20I match between India and England in 2011. The first day/night match took place in the 1993 Hero Cup semi-final between India and South Africa. The stadium also hosted the inaugural Nehru Cup matches in 1982. On January 14, 1984, India played Uruguay at Eden Gardens for the Nehru Cup. The Eden Gardens also hosted the India vs. Uruguay football match in the 1984 Nehru Cup.
