Bayer Leverkusen 0-2 Bayern Munich Player Ratings: Bayern book a ticket to the quarter-finals with a comfortable win
Bayern Munich secured a place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League with a comfy 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen, thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Alphonso Davies. It is a dominating display from the Bavarians as this result has put them 5-0 on aggregate over the two legs. They will play in the quarter-finals against Italian giants Inter Milan, who knocked out Feyenoord.
Leverkusen made four changes to their starting eleven, with their talisman Florian Wirtz getting injured in the Bundesliga and Nordi Mukiele getting sent off. Bayern made only one change, with youngster Jonas Urbig making it into the starting side over Manuel Neuer.
The game was off to an electric start, with both sides playing with an attacking intent, creating chances. Things got physical too, with the referee dishing out two yellow cards within ten minutes from kickoff itself. Bayern Munich looked more threatening, with their frontline combining well but failing to score on occasions, whereas Leverkusen looked like they were lacking a focal point in attack despite starting with striker Patrick Schick.
Leverkusen struggled when they played with a man down for some time, as Hermoso was getting treatment on the sidelines. While Hermoso tried to continue, he struggled to continue and left the pitch immediately. The half ended goal-less with Bayern Munich looking more comfortable than the hosts.
Bayern Munich continued to attack the defense and were rewarded with an opener as Kimmich clipped a free-kick over the top of the Leverkusen defence, who were too lazy to mark Harry Kane who brought it under control before tapping into an empty net. Leverkusen’s attacking intent improved after this goal, as they got their first shot on target, but it was Bayern who got the second goal of the night after Gnabry kept the ball alive which reached Kane eventually, who unselfishly set up Davies as he fired it into the bottom corner.
Bayern could have added their third of the match but Jamal Musiala was unfortunate with his shots as he hit the woodwork twice. Leverkusen at this point were looking for some consolation goals as the tie was done and dusted, but were denied that satisfaction after a fantastic defensive display from the visitor’s defense.
