Newcastle 1–2 Brighton Player Ratings: An Extra-Time Goal From Welbeck Saw the Seagulls Move Onto the Next Round
St. James’ Park saw the 5th round FA Cup tie go between the Magpies and the Seagulls. This Sunday evening match saw a 1-1 score in the normal time after goals from Isak and Minteh before heading into extra time. After the 114th-minute goal from the super-sub Welbeck, the Seagulls saw off their lead to move on to the next round.
The game started at its usual pace with both of the teams testing the waters in the early minutes. The home turf advantage was nowhere to be seen in the first 10 minutes as both clubs were equally comfortable on the pitch.
The first chance came for Brighton in the 15th minute when a missed play from Dubravka gifted Mitoma the ball in a promising position. However, as the numbers accumulated the attack fiddled out.
The 20th minute saw Minteh stopping Livramento illegally in the Brighton box and awarded the Magpies a penalty. Isak stepped up to the spot to take the kick. He kept his composure and slotted it past Verbruggen to give his team the 1-0 lead. With the goal, the hosts seem to gain a much-needed boost. They were moving the ball more smoothly.
In the 30th minute, another opportunity opened up for Isak and he hammered the ball in the back of the net but he made his run a little early which saw him offside. The game seemed to be going at a balanced pace, but that was until the 43rd minute when a clever ball from Pedro saw Minteh one-on-one with Dubravka. He kept his composure and equalized that saw a 1-1 scoreline. After the first half whistle, it was 1-1 between the teams with Minteh and Isak scoring each.
The second half started and right from the beginning, Newcastle approached the game with more energy. However, both Isak and Gordon were stopped in their tracks by the wing backs of Brighton with strong challenges. A moment of sloppy play from Livramento gave Pedro a half-chance. He had a thumping shot and forced Dubravka to make a save. In the 56th minute, the hosts made three changes in one go.
The 67th minute saw the lively Livramento make an inviting cross but there was no end product as Willock could not connect with a header. Controversy mounted over St James’ Park as Anthony Tailor believed it would fit to show Anthony Gordon a Red card after he shoved Lamptey. In the 91st minute, Lamptey’s poor challenge saw him getting a second yellow leaving his team to be a 10-man squad. Right after that foul, Guimaraes made a stunning delivery in the box and Schar guided it into the net with a header. However, it was ruled offside. After nothing separated the team, it went on to extra time.
The first 15 minutes of extra time saw a couple of half-chances from each side. But the score remained 1-1 at the end of the first 15 minutes. However, in the 2nd half of extra time, Danny Welbeck changed the course of the game after scoring the 2nd goal for his team to make the score 1-2 in the 114th minute. And the score stood 1-2 till the final whistle.
Here are the Newcastle vs Brighton Player Ratings.

RB- Livramento-4.5/10
No matter how eager he was to go forward to supply some quality balls in the center, he was kept in his place by Hinshelwood and Estupinan in the early minutes. Won the penalty for his team. Had a great one-two with Joelinton that opened up space in the box in the 50th minute.
CB- Schar-4.5/10
Was not given the green light to go forward from the start so he focused on his defensive duties. His goal was ruled offside.

CM-Tonali-5/10
Was crucial for the Magpies today. With Guimaraes on the bench, he had to go the extra mile and he did! The Italian has been terrific this evening.
CM-Joelinton-5/10
Moment of magic from the Brazilian as he found Anthony Gordon with an amazing ball which the Englishman carried inside to have a go from outside the box. He saw a yellow card after stopping Minteh illegally. He was subbed off in the 56th minute.
LW-Gordon- 5.5/10
Dropped deep and carried the ball with him in multiple occasions. It shows his hunger. Looked dangerous in the box whenever he cut inside. Saw the red card after making an awful decision to have a go at Lamptey.
ST-Isak-6/10
Always eager to drop deep to play a couple tof ouches with the midfield to open up spaces. No wonder he has the attention of all the European clubs. Scored the penalty to give his team the 1-0 lead. Got subbed off in the 86th minute as he was seen struggling.
RW-Barnes-4.5/10
His touches and timing of the passes could be better. He had a total of 20 touches before he was subbed off.

Brighton Player Ratings

Paired well with Lamptey to stop Gordon and Livramento multiple times as they went forward. He had a 91% accurate pass rate before being subbed off.
RM- Minteh-5/10
His challenge on Livramento was not at all necessary. It was nothing but a gift to the Magpies who made the most of the opportunity. However, he redeemed himself in the late minutes of the first half after equalizing for his team from a beautiful through pass from Pedro. He did not celebrate his goal against a club that did not give him the first-team opportunity.

Seemed to be in the commanding presence in the forward ever since the kick-off whistle. His sleek through ball saw Minteh equalize in the late minutes of the first half.
