Manchester City 4-0 Newcastle United Player Ratings: Omar Marmoush steals the show at Etihad for the hosts

Manchester City have charged back into the top 4 with a big win over Newcastle United. The Champions League race 6-pointer saw the Cityzens run out 4-0 winners at the Etihad on Saturday.

All the talk was about Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak ahead of the game but it was Omar Marmoush who stole the headlines early in the game. Ederson was left on his own 10 yards outside his box and he found the Egyptian star waiting to make a run in behind the Newcastle United defense. He made the most of Kieran Tripper misreading the ball and lobbed the ball over Martin Dubravka.

He did not have to wait long for his second as he made it 2-0 less than 5 minutes later. He was put into the box by Ilkay Gundogan and the new signing made no mistake as he cut inside and slotted it into the near post.

It took Marmoush less than 10 minutes to make it a hat-trick. It might not be a perfect hat-trick technically, but the finishes were so diverse that it showed the fans why he was signed by the Cityzens.

The match looked set to finish with a 3-0 scoreline after things settled down. However, Erling Haaland won the header at the near post in the 83rd minute from a corner and James McAtee made no mistake to tap it in at the far post. Here are Manchester City vs Newcastle United Player Ratings.

GK – Ederson – 7

Did not have a lot to do as a goalkeeper today, so he decided to spring passes to his forwards. Got the assist for the opening goal and had a rather quiet second half as well.

RB – Rico Lewis – 7

His performance will go under the radar today but he managed to keep Anthony Gordon quiet. He stuck to his position and charged out only when needed today instead of playing as a midfielder when they had the ball.

CB – John Stones – 8

Did not have a lot to do today but managed to keep Alexander Isak in check every time needed. Pick of the defenders today and he won all his duels as well.

CB – Abdukodir Khusanov – 7

He kept his calm today and did not struggle against Isak and Gordon. He too won all his duels today and managed to show why he was signed by the club this January.

LB – Josko Gvardiol – 7

He was up and down the flank today and almost played as a left winger today. Did not have to track back as a lot as his side controlled the possession and Murphy was hardly a threat in the game.

CDM – Nico González – 7.5

A performance he would like to remember after the FA Cup horror show. He was excellent on the ball and kept moving around to create space for his teammates and offer an option to pass.

CDM – Ilkay Gundogan – 7.5

He got an assist today but his role was to keep the ball moving. He did that to perfection and there was nothing more Pep Guardiola would have wanted from him.

RM – Savinho – 8

He was ruthless as he drove into the box continuously in the first half. However, he was just unable to convert his chances in the game but got the assist for Marmoush’s 3rd goal of the game. He gave Lewis Hall a game to forget.

LM – Omar Marmoush – 10

He was searching for his first goal for Manchester City, and the Egptian got it early in the game. Took his time after a brilliant ball from Ederson and lobbed it over Dubravka, who was stranded at the edge of the box. He swiftly made it 2-0 with a cut inside, leaving Trippier on the floor. Man of the match without a question.

CAM – Phil Foden – 6.5

No goal or assist today as he just strolled around and linked up play. Did not have a single shot in the game despite playing just outside the box most of the time.

ST – Erling Haaland – 7.5

No goals for the Manchester City star today but did get an assist in the game. He came off injured with a knee issue very late in the match and the fans would be hoping that it is nothing serious.

SUB – James McAtee – 7.5

Came on in the 76th minute and scored a goal to seal the 4-0 win.

SUB – Jeremu Doku – 5

Did not have a lot to do in the game today after coming on in the 76th minute.

SUB – Nico O’Reilly – 5

Came on for Gvardiol in the final minutes of the game but did not get on the ball to fetch a rating today.

SUB – Mateo Kovacic – 5

Came on to see out the match and did it as he always does off the bench.

SUB – Matheus Nunes – 5

There was no plan to bring him on but the injury to Erling Haaland forced Guardiola to make a late sub.

Manager – Pep Guardiola – 9

Set up the team well and there was nothing Newcastle United could do to break the defense.

Newcastle United Player Ratings

Alexander Isak
Alexander Isak of Newcastle United (NUFC/X)

GK – Martin Dubravka – 6

He cannot be blamed for the first goal but should have done better for the 2nd and 3rd goals from Marmoush. He made three saves in the game, but they hardly made a difference for the morale on the pitch.

RB – Kieran Trippier – 3.5

He struggled against Marmoush and lost all his duels with the Manchester City star. Was left on the floor by the Egyptian when he scored the second goal.

CB – Fabian Schar – 5

Rather poor today did not win a single aerial duel today. Did well to mark Haaland but that saw him move out of position a lot.

CB – Dan Burn – 4

He was strolling around and trying aggressively charge out of position to close down the Manchester City players. However, that left the backline exposed and gave the opponents a lot of space.

LB – Lewis Hall – 5.5

Struggled against Savinho and and had a tough time staying in his position as he needed to cover for Burn who was charging out. He was still the best defender for Newcastle United today.

CDM – Sandro Tonali – 6

A match he would like to forget quickly as he was isolated a lot of times. He played the full match but failed to do much on the ball.

CDM – Bruno Guimares – 6

He was all over the pitch but failed to impact the scoreline or the game. He hardly got on the ball and that saw Newcastle United also struggle to get in the game.

RW – Jacob Murphy – 4

He kept trying to get past Stones but failed to do anything in the final third. No shots, no completed cross and no chances created as well.

CAM – Joe Willock – 4.5

Jogged around the pitch in the first half and had to be taken off as there was nothing he could do to impact the game. He kept losing possession and was pocketed by Rico Lewis.

LW – Anthony Gordon – 5

Played over 70 minutes but could not do anything in the game. Very much like his teammates, he too failed to get a shot away nor did he create chances.

ST – Alexander Isak – 6

Started the game well but failed to get any shot in the match after the 30th minute. It was his only shot in the match and it was blocked by Stones.

SUB – Valentino Livramento – 5

He was brought on for Trippier as the Englishman struggled against Marmoush. He did better than the former Tottenham man and kept the scoreline respectable.

SUB – Lewis Miley – 6

He too failed to make an impact after coming at half-time. He hardly got the ball but managed to get a shot on target, unlike the other Newcastle United players.

SUB – Sean Longstaff – 5

Played just over 18 minutes and hardly got on the ball. 6 touches and 4 passes in his time on the pitch.

SUB – Callum Wilson – 5

Came on for Anthony Gordon today for the final 18 minutes of the game. However, he got 3 touches of the ball and did not get close to scoring.

SUB – Emile Krafth – 4

Came on for his first appearance of the calendar year but the final whistle blew even before he could get on the ball.

Manager – Eddie Howe – 5

Did not get anything right and the players also failed to make the most of things today.
