Family has an important role to play: Christian Pulisic

Having a good support system is key to any person, especially sportspersons who have to sacrifice a lot in order to reach the top level of the respective sports. According to Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, that is often a crucial seperating factor when it comes to people making or not making it after coming to big European clubs from elsewhere. “This is the reason that a lot of players don’t make it in Europe whenever they try to come over here is because, you know, you deal with the stress of not being with your family,” he stated.

This interview and a few others are a part of a new behind the scenes documentary style series on Paramount+ in the US, titled ‘Pulisic’. The show delves into person behind the country’s most popular soccer star, Christian Pulisic, and the third episode in particular deals with his family and support system.

Pulisic has been in Europe for a long time. He joined the Borussia Dortmund academy in 2015, making his first team debut in 2016. There he built up quite the reputation for himself, before making a big money move to Chelsea to replace the outgoing Eden Hazard. At the Stamford Bridge, things didn’t quite work out, mainly due to injuries and instability at the club but he would go on to win a Champions League title. Now at AC Milan, Pulisic seems to have found a stable home and is performing again.

The show also had interviews of his siblings who are obviously very proud of him. “Proud, you know, just happy that he’s doing what he loves. He’s just my brother. And I don’t think of him as someone different. And he’s a great uncle. I brag and I’ll see someone with this jersey and I’ll be like, oh hey, that’s my brother”, they were quoted to be saying.

The winger, nicknamed Captain America by fans also recognised the importance of his family in his career. “My family, they’re why I do what I do. They’re the people that push me every single day. My family, they’re why I do what I do. They’re the people that push me every single day. They’ve done it all. They’ve seen it all. They’ve been on this journey with me and I wouldn’t be who I am without them.” Pulisic is in the midst of a great season for Milan but his next step undoubtedly remains in doing something remarkable with the USMNT.
