Owing to his age, declining physicality, and output, the player’s contracts have downsized massively. With clubs like Olympiacos and Fluminense unable to provide the same financial incentives as a club like Real Madrid, the Brazilian has had to settle for much less in the final years of his career. Regardless, he has continued playing for the love of the sport, having amassed significant wealth during his prime. 

Interestingly, Marcelo has also been an Adidas-sponsored athlete for a big part of his career, and at the latter end of his professional career, he has also partnered with H2Bet. Marcelo’s Early Life and Club Career

By and large, Marcelo took to the sport at a very young age, just like many Brazilian kids, and developed a real knack for the sport early on. Owing to his obvious talent, he found himself on the books of Fluminense, having grabbed their attention as a futsal player. That said, poor family background and early hardships nearly saw the player give up on his dreams and the sport entirely. Supposedly, it was his grandfather who urged him to keep going and continue playing the sport.

This would then lead him to find his place in the youth academy of Fluminense in 2002, wherein he continued to develop and by 2005, find his place in the senior team. During his first stint in the first team, the player would garner a lot of attention which would eventually lead to his historic move to Real Madrid in 2007. Although still very young, Marcelo was hailed as an important signing by the Los Blancos’s then president, Ramón Calderón.

Naturally, the player’s ability was visible for all to see and his capacity to fly up and down the flanks was a vital asset for the club. Not only that, but his Brazilian genes also meant that Marcelo had sublime control over the football as well. However, a recurring theme throughout Marcelo’s career has been his habit of at times struggling with the defensive aspect of the game, which at times saw him deployed further up the pitch under manager Juande Ramos. 

By 2009, Marcelo had become a vital part of the squad, appearing in both offensive and defensive roles under managers Manuel Pellegrini and Jose Mourinho, with the latter solidifying the Brazilian’s defensive aspect of the game. Notably, the 2010s were some of Marcelo’s best in a Madrid shirt, with the player earning many plaudits for his performances and consistency. Not only that but the Brazilian fullback received high praise from legends of the game like Diego Maradona and Paulo Maldini as well. 

From 2018 onwards, Marcelo had become one of the senior members of the squad and prior to his eventual departure in 2022, had also taken up the role of captaincy on more than a few occasions. For the most part, there was a growing feeling that Marcelo felt alienated with some of the closest and oldest friends departing the club in recent years. With his partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo well documented, it was only likely that Marcelo soon followed the Portuguese superstar out the door. This now led him to Olympiacos, where despite a very solid start, the player terminated his contract by mutual consent within five months. 

As such, it led him back to the place he once called home and where his journey began with Fluminense. In his one-and-a-half season back with his childhood club, Marcelo would go on to lift three more trophies, before clashes with the manager saw the player part ways with the club by way of mutual consent. Most recently, the player announced his decision to finally step away from professional football. 

Marcelo International Career 

Naturally, Marcelo was also a consistent presence at the international level as well for the Selecao, having featured for the under-17, under-20, and under-23 sides as well. That said, Marcelo’s first big break with the Brazil national team came at the 2008 Summer Olympics, finishing the tournament with a bronze medal. 

Further appearances saw Marcelo included in the squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, 2012 Summer Olympics, 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, 2014 FIFA World Cup, and also the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
