Wolves vs Sheffield United Preview, Prediction and Betting Tips

Wolves vs Sheffield United Match Preview

Wolverhampton Wanderers host Sheffield United at the Molineux Stadium on Sunday in the Premier League. The Wolves are looking to get over their erratic form and build on their last win. Gary O’Neil’s side beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in London for another major scalp this season. They had also beaten them at home, completed a league double over Chelsea, while also having beaten Manchester City in September.

Yet, the West Midlands outfit are down in 11th position with 35 points from 25 games. That’s because Wolves have been utterly erratic in their form. For context, just a week after their 4-3 humbling at home by Manchester United, they beat Chelsea 4-2 at the Stamford Bridge, only to then lost 2-0 to Brentford at home. But they then recovered to beat Spurs 2-1 away.

Consistency is lacking in their game. Else, the side would’ve been in European places today. Another major factor holding them back is their leaky defense, with Wolves conceding 40 times from 25 league games. That’s more than 1.5 goals per game. In fact, from the top 11 sides on the table, only West Ham (-8) have a worse goal difference than Wolves (-1).

On the other hand, Sheffield United are languishing at the bottom of the table with only 13 points from 25 games. The Blades, playing in their first top-flight campaign since the 2020-21 season, have struggled on their return. In fact, they’ve won just thrice all season, although one of them was against Wolves.

Head coach Paul Heckingbottom was given the sack in December for being unable to anchor the sinking ship. Former manager Chris Wilder, who had managed the side from 2016 to 2021, was roped back in. Nonetheless, he too has been unable to steer the side towards safety. Moreover, in their most recent outing, Sheffield were battered 5-0 by Brighton.

Team News

Wolves

The Wolves dealt a massive blow during their home loss to Brentford as Matheus Cunha went off with a hamstring injury. He has been ruled out for the foreseeable future. Hwang Hee-chan might retain his place in the attack despite drawing a blank in their last game.

Predicted XI: Jose Sa; Maximilian Kilman, Craig Dawson, Toti; Nelson Semedo, Mario Lemina, Joao Gomes, Rayan Ait-Nouri; Pedro Neto, Pablo Sarabia; Hwang Hee-chan

Sheffield United

The Blades are nursing quite a few casualties right now. Chris Basham and Tom Davies have been missing since October, whereas John Egan sustained a foot injury back in September and has been missing in action ever since. Rhys Norrington-Davies and Ben Brereton are also doubtful for the clash, having their Brighton clash too.

Predicted XI: Wes Foderingham; Jayden Bogle, Mason Holgate, Anel Ahmedhozic, Jack Robinson, Max Lowe; James McAtee, Vinicius Souza, Gustavo Hamer, Ben Osborn; Cameron Archer.

Head-To-Head

There have been 119 clashes between Wolves and Sheffield United before. Interestingly, both sides have won 41 times over each other. There have been 37 draws in the fixture, but none in their last five.

Last 5 games, head-to-head

Sheffield United 2-1 Wolves (Premier League, November 2023)

Wolves 3-0 Sheffield United (FA Cup, January 2022)

Wolves 1-0 Sheffield United (Premier League, November 2021)

Sheffield United 0-2 Wolves (Premier League, September 2020)

Sheffield United 1-0 Wolves (Premier League, July 2020)

As you can see, the fixture has been almost even in their recent games. After failing to win two games against Sheffield United, Wolves won three in a row, before losing again this season.

Prediction

Given their erratic form, it’s hard to expect which side of Wolves will show up here. Gary O’Neil’s side had even lost their earlier league meeting with Sheffield but will have revenge on their minds, with the Blades languishing at the bottom. They were battered 5-0 by Brighton in their last game and their defensive vulnerabilities were exposed yet again. Buoyed by their Tottenham scalp, the Wolves might edge out their visitors here.

Predicted score: Wolves 2-1 Sheffield United
